As two of India’s premier institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and IIT Bhilai have consistently been at the forefront of engineering education and research. Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur has a strong reputation, ranking 5th in the NIRF 2024. In contrast, IIT Bhilai, inaugurated in 2016, is a newer institution but is quickly rising, ranked 73rd in the same rankings.
While both institutes have made strides in securing lucrative positions for their students, a closer look reveals significant differences in average salaries, registration, and placement outcomes.
IIT Kanpur continues to set the bar high with an impressive average salary of Rs 26.27 lakh per annum during the 2023-24 placement season. This marks a consistent increase in the institute’s average package over the years, reflecting its strong industry connections and the high demand for its graduates.
In contrast, IIT Bhilai, although a newer institution, has shown a steady improvement in its placement packages. For the 2023 placement season, the average salary stood at Rs 14 lakh per annum, with the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) branch reporting an even higher average package of Rs 18.93 lakh per annum. While these figures are commendable, they still trail behind those of the better established IIT Kanpur.
IIT Kanpur’s robust placement system is evident from the 989 offers received during the first phase of the 2023-24 placement season. Of these, 913 students, including those with Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), secured positions. The institute has consistently maintained a high placement percentage over the years, cementing its reputation as one of the top IITs in the country.
IIT Bhilai, inaugurated in 2016, has made significant strides in improving its placement statistics. The 2021-22 placement season saw 107 students placed out of 119 registered, indicating a growing success rate. The 2023 placement season continued this trend, with a notable placement percentage of 77.78 per cent for the CSE branch. As the institute continues to grow, its placement outcomes are expected to improve further.
IIT Kanpur’s long standing industry connections have attracted top global and national recruiters, including Microsoft, Samsung, and Goldman Sachs. The first day of the 2023-24 placement season alone saw 485 job offers, highlighting the institute’s strong foothold in the placement domain.
On the other hand, IIT Bhilai has also established significant industry ties, particularly for internships. In 2023, over 90 internship offers were extended to students, with companies such as NVIDIA, Intuit, and Trilogy participating. These internships often lead to pre-placement offers, reflecting the institute’s growing industry reputation.
While IIT Kanpur remains a leader in engineering placements with higher average salaries and placement rates, IIT Bhilai is rapidly gaining ground. The younger institute’s continuous improvement in placement statistics and industry connections signals a bright future, even as it continues to develop its reputation in the competitive landscape of Indian engineering education.
