IIT Placements: Mandi vs Hyderabad, which engineering college performed better in CSE?

The Indian Institutes of Technology, Mandi (IIT Mandi) and Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), are both prestigious institutions, particularly known for their Computer Science Engineering (CSE) programmes. Over the last five years, both institutes have shown remarkable placement performances for their CSE graduates.

IIT Mandi, which was established in 2009 achieved a rank of 31 in this year’s Engineering category of NIRF Ranking. On the other hand, IIT Hyderabad, which was established in 2008, achieved a rank of 8 in this year’s Engineering category of NIRF Ranking.

Average salary

In the 2022-23 placement season, IIT Hyderabad’s CSE graduates secured an average salary of Rs 27.11 lakh per annum, with the highest package reaching Rs 51.03 lakh per annum. While this represents a slight decline from the previous year, where the average package was Rs 29.76 lakh per annum and the highest was Rs 65.46 lakh per annum, IIT Hyderabad continues to be a top choice for recruiters. Over the last five years, the average salary at IIT Hyderabad has generally increased, starting from Rs 23.13 lakh per annum in 2018-19, peaking at Rs 29.76 lakh in 2021-22, and slightly tapering off in 2022-23. The highest package during this period varied from Rs 47 lakh per annum in 2019-20 to Rs 65.46 lakh per annum in 2021-22.

At IIT Mandi, the average salary for CSE graduates has also shown significant growth. In the 2022-23 placement season, the average salary stood at Rs 33.68 lakh per annum, a considerable increase from Rs 14.79 lakh per annum in 2018-19. The highest package at IIT Mandi in 2022-23 was Rs 60 lakh per annum, reflecting a sharp rise from Rs 26 lakh per annum in 2018-19. This trend demonstrates IIT Mandi’s increasing attractiveness to high-profile recruiters.

Placement rates and student registrations

IIT Hyderabad has consistently maintained a high placement rate for its CSE students. In the 2022-23 placement season, 159 students registered for placements, with 98% securing job offers. Over the past five years, IIT Hyderabad has attracted a growing number of recruiters, including top companies like Adobe, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. The number of international offers has also increased, with 54 international offers made in 2022-23, up from 46 the previous year.

IIT Mandi has also seen a steady increase in its placement rates. In 2022-23, 108 students registered for CSE placements, with 95 per cent of them successfully placed. The total number of offers received has been rising, with 103 offers made in 2022-23 compared to 58 offers in 2018-19. Major companies such as Uber, Amazon, Walmart, and Oracle have been regular recruiters at IIT Mandi, with 19 international offers made during the latest placement season.

The comparison between IIT Hyderabad and IIT Mandi reveals some key differences in placement outcomes. While IIT Hyderabad has consistently offered higher average salaries, IIT Mandi has shown remarkable growth in both average and highest salary packages over the years. For instance, in 2022-23, the average salary at IIT Mandi (Rs 33.68 lakh per annum) surpassed that of IIT Hyderabad (Rs 27.11 lakh per annum). However, IIT Hyderabad continues to attract more international offers and has a slightly higher placement rate.

The placement data from both institutes indicates that while IIT Hyderabad remains a strong contender with consistent performance, IIT Mandi is quickly catching up, especially in terms of salary offerings.
