Established in 1967, the National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) secured 83 rank under the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 overall category. It is a decline of seven positions when compared to the NIRF 2022 rankings of 76.
The Institute which was granted a deemed university status in 2002, was placed within the 601-800 band in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking 2024, however, it did not achieve a ranking in the QS World University Ranking in 2023.

Additionally, not only has it witnessed a decline in its overall ranking, but it has also experienced a decrease in its rank under the engineering category by two positions, dropping from 38 rank in 2022 to 40 rank in 2023
Although its position fell in 2023, similar to the overall rankings, its score in engineering has consistently increased over the past five years. It was 55.07 in 2023, 54.63 (2022), 49.57 (2021), 48.66 (2020), and 45.61 (2019).
This NIT ranks 83 in the overall category of NIRF 2023 rankings, scoring 51.36 in teaching, learning, and resources (TLR) out of 100, 42.81 in research and professional practice (RPP) out of 100, 68.84 in graduation outcomes (GO), 54.16 in outreach and inclusivity (OI), and 6.78 in perception out of 100.
Upgraded to an institution of national importance in 2007, NIT Silchar claims to be committed to inclusivity for students with disabilities. The institute provides ramps in all academic buildings and hostels, specially designed washrooms, transportation between hostels and academic blocks for students with disabilities, wheelchairs, and lift facility.
The institution offers undergraduate programmes in BTech under various disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical and communication engineering, electronics and instrumentation engineering. All of these undergraduate programmes culminate in a mandatory three-month industrial internship.s
