The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is the seventh IIT in the country which was converted into an Institute through an ordinance by the government of India in 1996. The Institute has completed more than 175 years of its existence and has always ranked in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In the year 2024, under the NIRF category, IIT Roorkee ranked 6 with a score of 76, a decline of one rank as compared to 2023. Last year the Institute ranked 5 and that too with a score of 75.64. The only way to get admission to the IIT Roorkee is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) and JEE Advanced. Now let us check the last five years' performance of IIT Roorkee on different parameters like engineering, overall category, research institutions, management, architecture and planning, and innovation. Years Overall Engineering Research Management Architecture & planning Innovation 2024 8 6 9 18 1 6 2023 8 5 7 18 1 5 2022 7 6 8 19 1 -* 2021 7 6 7 14 1 -* 2020 9 6 -* 12 2 -* (*NIRF rankings introduced the category of innovation in 2023 onwards, while the research category was launched after 2020) The above table clearly shows that as compared to the engineering category, IIT Roorkee is performing great in architecture and planning. Over the last four years, it has maintained a steady rank. It was just in 2020, when the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur secured the first spot. The engineering rank of the institute also ranges between 5-6, with just once, in 2023, when IIT Roorkee secured 5, else it has so far maintained its position. The Institute offers bachelor's degree programmes in 10 disciplines of engineering and architecture, as well as postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of engineering, applied science, architecture, and planning. Additionally, the Institute provides facilities for doctoral research in all departments and research centres, as mentioned on the official website. This year, the Institute is also hosting GATE 2025. The national-level entrance examination is held every year to provide students admission into the postgraduate programmes in Indian universities.
