The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT ) is one of India’s premier engineering institutions and the oldest IIT among all. Established in 1951, it is renowned for its academic excellence, and research contributions. IIT Kharagpur has various alumni including IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, Ajit Jain, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, among others.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework, a national-level ranking released by the Ministry of Education every year, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur ranked 5 with a score of 76.88.
Now let us check the last five years’ performance of IIT Kharagpur on different parameters like engineering, overall category, research institutions, management, architecture and planning, and innovation.

The above table clearly shows that in the overall category, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has maintained its position between 5-6 spot in the last five years. It was just once when the institute was ranked in the 7th spot under the overall category.
The institute has consistently been ranked 5th in Engineering, except for 2023, when it reached 6th place. In Research, it has secured the 5th position consistently since 2021.
IIT Kharagpur’s management ranking has shown a downward trend from 5th in 2020 to 19th in 2024. This might suggest increasing competition from other management institutions. The institute has consistently ranked between 1st and 3rd place, showing its strength in the architecture and planning field. Under innovation rankings, in 2024, IIT Kharagpur secured 9th place.
IIT Kharagpur has maintained its spot in Engineering and Research, but its Management ranking has dropped significantly in recent years. The overall ranking remains competitive, showing IIT Kharagpur’s strong academic and research influence. However, the declining Management ranking might indicate rising competition from other business schools and other IITs who are now expanding their management programmes.
Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur has inaugurated Zen Lounge, a yoga and meditation hall located within the SNIG Girls Hostel in the campus. The Zen Lounge is dedicated to “foster mindfulness, well-being, and mental wellness for the students,” and marks an important milestone in promoting holistic education, said IIT Kharagpur.
The lounge is set-up with the generous support of IIT alumna Viji Narayanan who resided in the same girls’ hostel during her undergraduate years from (1986-1991).
This Alumni Mentorship Programme is a part of Women in Leadership initiated by Partha Ghosh and Asoke Deysarkar from IIT KGP Alumni Foundation USA. This virtual lounge is a platform for alumni to give back to its alma mater with just a couple of hours a week to guide and support all the students.
