The number of women rose from 908 women in 2017 to 2,124 in 2024 – a 133% jump at IIT-Kanpur. At IIT-Roorkee, the number went up from 1,489 in 2019-20 to 2,626 in 2024 — a 76.36% jump. IITs in Chennai, Mumbai, Guwahati and Kharagpur, too, saw similar increases. IITs Delhi and Bombay crossed the 20% threshold in 2017 — even before the quota was implemented. Of IIT Delhi’s 2,878 students that year, 607 or 21.09% were women. In the first semester of 2024 at IIT Delhi, that number stood at 840 — a rise of 38.39%. In the case of IIT Bombay, of 2,790 students in 2017, 570 or 20.43% were women.
IITs provide 20% supernumerary quota to female students. The quota was implemented in 2018 based on the recommendations of a committee led by then IIT-Mandi Director Timothy Gonsalves, which called it “the required slight push”. While most IITs implemented a 14% quota for women in 2018-19, by 2019-20 it stood at 19% and by 2021-22, most of them had 20% seats for women. Six years on, data obtained by The Indian Express under the Right to Information (RTI) Act from 21 of the 23 IITs reveals a steady increase in the number of women entering these prestigious institutes. With the placement season beginning at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) from December 1, many students have opted to sit out and not participate in this placement season. Why? They have managed to secure a PPO.
When students secure a placement offer before the placement drive starts on campus, that offer is called a pre-placement offer (PPO). The journey to securing a PPO begins over a year before the on-campus placement drive begins. Many engineering students take up summer internships during their course of study, be it as part of their curriculum or their own exploration. After successful completion of their internship period, some students are offered a full-time position by the company which changes their status from an intern to a permanent employee in that company.
The internships that students secure can be attained on-campus or off-campus, depending on students’ exploration and the institute’s partnerships. Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) is increasingly gaining popularity among IIT students. For example, IIT Madras (in the 2022-23 placement season) stated that the institute received a record-breaking 350 PPOs after the 2022 summer internships.
IIT Delhi also conducted an exit survey among the graduated students which revealed that only 5 per cent graduated students (from last year) were still looking for appropriate career opportunities. A large fraction of these students comprises of PhD scholars looking for Post-Doctoral Research opportunities abroad.
Students availing on-campus placement in 2023-2024 had increased by about 25 per cent from 2022-23, which includes a six-fold increase in number of PhD scholars. The total number of graduates in 2023-24 is higher than the previous year by close to 10 per cent, and the number of PhD graduates by 30 per cent.
For the first time, IIT Delhi conducted a special placement drive for PhD Scholars in June 2024, which helped to increase the number of offers by seven times compared to the previous year. Notwithstanding the success of the initial attempt at PhD placement, a large majority of these graduates are placed through off-campus placement which is to be expected as they are recruited to occupy niche roles.
Not all students of IIT Delhi are availing on-campus placement services, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT D) has revealed through an exit survey commissioned by the institute amongst the students who graduated in August 2024.
In this exit survey, 1411 (53.1 per cent) students confirmed that they have received a job offer. On the other hand, 224 (8.4 per cent) students responded that they were self-employed, whereas 45 (1.7 per cent) students informed that they are working for a start-up and 66 (2.5 per cent) students were involved in entrepreneurship.
As per the exit survey, 359 (13.5 per cent) IIT Delhi students responded that they are going for higher studies, 47 (1.8 per cent) PhD students informed that they are waiting for a post-doctoral research opportunity or for a faculty position. Similarly, 321 (~ 12.1 per cent) students informed that they are preparing for different examinations, for example, civil services, engineering services, and examinations required for different government jobs.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) is one of the premier institutes in the country that has remained under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Education Ministry. In 2024, the Delhi-based institute ranked second with a score of 86.66. Not only under the engineering category, the institute also ranked fourth in the management category.
IIT Palakkad has announced six-week long residential summer internship programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students with hands-on research experience. The programme will start in May. Students who are shortlisted will get an opportunity to learn both hardware and software analysis tools along with exposure to a variety of research domains.
Both Indian and foreign nationals who meet the eligibility can enrol for the internship. Students from IIT Palakkad are not eligible for this internship programme, and foreign nationals studying in Indian institutions will be treated on par with Indian nationals.

The first phase of the IIT BHU placement drive began on November 30 and continued till December 12, 2024. The CTC range received in the first phase ranged between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 1.65 crore.
The cut-offs depend on multiple factors. The number of total candidates appearing the exam availability of seats at the participating institutions, previous year’s trends and the difficulty level of the exam play an important role in deciding the cut-off.

IIT Bombay’s campus is a world of its own. There’s always something happening—be it music jamming sessions with friends in the evenings or orientations by various clubs and tech teams. Most of my evenings were spent attending these orientations, getting to know the vast opportunities available. I must say the food here at the mess is something I have come to love. Contrary to the usual belief that mess food is not tasty, I have found the meals here to be quite good, especially considering the long hours of work.
The professors at IIT Bombay are incredibly supportive, always encouraging us to not only focus on academics but also to explore extracurricular activities. One memorable experience for me was in my first semester’s mathematics course. My professor would demonstrate mathematical concepts using examples from ancient Sanskrit texts and even old Bollywood songs, which made the class not only informative but also fun and engaging
The cut-off might increase this year as students who appeared for the exams found the paper easy to moderate. According to students who appeared in JEE Main and as per feedback received from experts, questions in all the JEE Main 2025 shifts held between January 22 and 29 covered almost all chapters of Class 11 and 12 NCERT textbooks.

Entry into NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) requires thorough preparation as both are premier institutes and require high standards of education. However, the approach towards their admission process and entrance exams is quite different in so many ways, affecting a student’s preparation strategy.
The second session exam will be held between April 1 and 8. The JEE Main 2025 is held for two papers – paper 1 (BE/ BTech) and paper 2 (BArch and BPlanning).
Engineering is no longer the top choice of Indian students flocking to the United States for higher education. This is revealed in the latest Open Doors report, an annual survey examining international student exchange activity in the US.
While engineering continues to dominate as the most popular field, this has seen a dip in recent years. Going by the data, in 2023-24, about 24.5 per cent Indians in the US pursued engineering, which is nearly a 5 per cent drop of 29.6 per cent in 2021-22. Meanwhile, maths or computer science are the most popular fields drawing Indians, with 42.9 per cent pursuing these in 2023-24.
