NEET-NET Row 2024 Updates: ‘Not rational to cancel entire exam’, says centre to SC

Almost 13 days after the NEET PG exam was cancelled, the revised exam date of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, Postgraduate (NEET PG) is announced today. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) will now conduct the NEET PG exam on August 11. NEET PG 2024 will be held in two shifts. 

The Punjab & Haryana High Court has adjourned the plea to quash NEET UG 2024 retest result in view of the pendency before the Supreme Court, reported Live Law. 

The centre has asked the states to help introduce an additional layer of oversight for the exams by appointing one civil and one police observer for each exam centre in their respective states. An observer is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the exam is fair and free of any malpractices.

Tamil Nadu BJP on Thursday accused the DMK and other parties of using the NEET as a tool to target the BJP government at the Centre.
It also reiterated that the ruling dispensation should furnish a white paper on the performance of students from the state in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). BJP state chief K Annamalai sought to know what prevented the Tamil Nadu government, which passed resolutions in the Assembly seeking exemption from NEET on three occasions, from revealing the details. "The state government should present the data on the students' performance ten years before and after the test came into existence. Let the government say if any particular section like OBC, SC/ST has been affected due to the test," Annamalai told reporters here.

The ruling CPI(M)'s student outfit SFI on Thursday carried out a march to the Kerala Raj Bhavan here in protest against the irregularities in the NEET and demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The protest saw the police using water cannons to disperse the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists, who became violent by pulling down the barricades set up by the police and were also seen smashing a riot-shield used by the force.

After breaching the barricades, the SFI activists, led by its state secretary P M Arsho, shouted slogans against the central government in connection with the irregularities in the medical entrance exam and sat down on the road in front of the police personnel who were present in large numbers to prevent the protestors from moving forward.

As the protestors ignored repeated demands of the police to disperse, police arrested and removed many of them by force.
Police were seen forcibly carrying away many of the protestors, including women, into the police vehicles, according to visuals shown on TV channels.

Over 50 successful Gujarat-based NEET-UG candidates, including several who have been ranked first, have moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to restrain the Centre and the National Testing Agency from cancelling the controversy-ridden exam.
They have sought a direction from the top court to the Union Education Ministry to probe, identify and take strict action against students and others who indulged in unfair practices like paper leak and impersonation in the NEET-UG exam conducted on May 5 this year.

The fresh plea by 56 students has been filed days before a top court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is scheduled to hear as many as 26 petitions seeking reliefs like re-test and probe into the conduct of the examination plagued by allegations of malpractices.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country. NEET-UG, 2024 was held across 4,750 centres on May 5 and around 24 lakh candidates appeared in the exam.

The opposition Congress on Thursday urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to convene a special meeting of the territorial Assembly and adopt a resolution requesting the Centre to scrap NEET and exempt Puducherry from the test. The Congress submitted a joint memorandum to Rangasamy signed by Puducherry PCC president and Lok Sabha member V Vaithilingam, party legislator M Vaithianathan, party functionaries P K Devadass and R K R Anandaraman bringing to the notice of the chief minister several issues affecting the public.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) started a raid Wednesday afternoon in a New Town’s apartment in Kolkata. Sources said the raid was in connection with an investigation into the NEET-paper leak.

The New Town flat belonged to Amit Kumar, a Jharkhand resident. The CBI special unit team reached the flat on the second floor of the apartment complex along with a key specialist, following which they started the search operation.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday brought the arrested accused in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG case to the special CBI court based in Bihar's Patna. Soon, the accused will be presented before the court.

On Wednesday, the CBI nabbed the suspected key conspirator in connection with the irregularities in the NEET-UG case, according to an official. The suspected key conspirator, identified as Aman Singh, was arrested in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.

This was the seventh arrest made by the central agency in connection with the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exams 2024. Earlier, the CBI arrested the owner of a private school from Gujarat's Godhra for allegedly soliciting money from candidates in exchange for enhancing their scores.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) today issued an advisory for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for postgraduate courses (NEET PG) students. The advisory warned students against falling prey to 'unscrupulous agents/touts'.

The Board also warned students to not believe any fake notice being circulated in social media regarding the announcement of revised schedule for conduct of NEET PG 2024. "All NBEMS notices issued from July 2020 onwards bear a QR code. Scanning the QR code will redirect the user to the said Notice on NBEMS website," the notice added.

Activists of CPI(M) student wing SFI held demonstrations outside two universities here on Thursday as part of its day-long students' strike to protest against alleged irregularities in NEET and UGC NET exams. They burnt tyres in front of one of the gates of the Jadavpur University in the southern part of the city, while they staged a sit-in before the main gate of the Presidency University in the

College Street area, demanding the arrest of masterminds in the alleged irregularities in the two exams. The agitating students held placards and demanded action against the National Testing Agency which organised the medical entrance examination NEET and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The strike called by the SFI disrupted classes at several universities where the Left students' union has strength.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday attacked the opposition alleging it is misleading students by spreading lies on the NEET issue and should stop its "cheat policy". Pradhan's comments came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Rajya Sabha that the government will not spare those playing with the future of students. Amid a raging row over alleged irregularities, including paper leaks, in competitive examinations such as the NEET and the NET, the opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue in Parliament.

The Congress on Wednesday slammed the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the delay in the results for the Common University Entrance Test and claimed that the exam is one reason why more and more youngsters are looking to go abroad for undergraduate education. The results for the CUET were scheduled to be announced by June 30. The agency is yet to give any update about when the results will be declared. University Grants Commission chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said the NTA is working on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) results and will announce a date soon.

56 Gujarat-based students approach the Supreme Court against the Re-NEET(UG) exam. The petitioners contend that the NEET-UG 2024 exam should not be cancelled and seek action against students who indulged in malpractices, reported Live Law. 

India Youth Front, an umbrella group representing INDIA bloc parties' youth wings, on Wednesday said they will hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 8 against the reported incidents of paper leak in the NEET exam. While addressing a press conference here, Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV said that the India Youth Front will hold a protest against the paper leaks in the medical entrance exam. The further strategy will be decided on July 8, he said.

The national presidents of several youth parties of India Alliance were present on this occasion. During this, everyone strongly condemned the policies of the Central government regarding the rigging and paper leak in the NEET-UG examination and demanded that the government should provide justice to the young students of the country as soon as possible, a statement by the IYC said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the suspected key conspirator in connection with the irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG case, said the official. According to the official, the suspected key conspirator, identified as Aman Singh, was arrested in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.

Earlier on Friday, the CBI nabbed two accused, namely -- Dr. Ehsaan Ul Haq and Imtiaz Alam -- who were working as the principal and vice principal of the Oasis School in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh. Haq was appointed the city coordinator by the NEET-UG exam 2024. This also follows two more arrests made by the central agency in Bihar's Patna. A senior official with the CBI confirmed the arrest of two people identified as Manish Prakash and Ashutosh.

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday said the opposition to NEET is an "all-India issue" now and sounded confident of seeing a "good result," vis-a-vis its possible abolition, on a day when top Tamil actor Vijay backed an Assembly resolution against the central qualifying test piloted by the government recently. The DMK's students' wing held a protest demanding the abolition of NEET, even as Opposition AIADMK and BJP hit out at the ruling party for "misleading people" and enacting a "drama" over the issue.

NEET has been a sensitive issue in Tamil Nadu as scores of medical aspirants have died allegedly by suicide over the past few years, either over failing the exam or fears of unable to crack it. All major political parties, including the DMK and the AIADMK have been opposed to NEET.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in the Rajya Sabha assured the medical aspirants that the government will not spare the ones playing with the future. The Prime Minister's comments came amid a row over alleged irregularities in NEET UG. The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue in the Parliament.

Student outfits of some INDIA bloc parties began their protest at Jantar Mantar here against alleged irregularities in several competitive exams held by the National Testing Agency. Members of the Left-backed All India Students Association (AISA), Student Federation of India (SFI), All India Students' Federation (AISF), along with Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha and Congress' students wing NSUI have gathered at the protest site to take out the march. The student groups aim to march to Parliament to press for their demands of scrapping the National Testing Agency, resignation of the Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and decentralisation of entrance tests.

Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder and Tamil actor Vijay on Wednesday spoke out against NEET, and extended his support to the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly against the central qualifying test, seeking exemption to the southern state.
Addressing students at an event organised by him to honour rank holders of classes 10 and 12, the actor-politician also said Education should be brought to the State List.
He claimed students in Tamil Nadu, especially the poor, those from backward and very backward classes in the rural areas have been "badly affected," in their pursuit for medical education following the introduction of the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test.
NEET was also against states' rights as Education was moved to the concurrent list in 1975, he said.
He also wondered how a student who had studied in a state syllabus and the local language could do well in the central test, based on the "NCERT" curriculum.
He indicated there cannot be "one nation, one curriculum." "Curriculum should be state-specific. It should give importance to different perspectives. Diversity is a strength, not weakness. After studying in state language and syllabus and exam based on NCERT, how is it fair...think about the rural students, how difficult it is for them." "We have seen some reports of irregularities in NEET. After this, its credibility has gone. We have understood NEET is no more required. The solution is exemption (to TN from the test). I wholeheartedly support the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution seeking exemption for the state", he said.
He said without much delay, Centre "should respect TN people's sentiments," on NEET.
The permanent solution would be to move Education from Concurrent list to State list and if there was any 'difficulty' in this, "a special Concurrent List could be created and include Education and Health in it," following a Constitutional amendment, he said.

The Panchmahal district court on Tuesday transferred the proceedings in the case of the alleged irregularities in NEET UG to the CBI in Ahmedabad after the latest four-day remand of the four arrested accused came to an end.

The district and sessions Judge also transferred the judicial custody of the four accused to the CBI court, following which, they will be shifted from Godhra sub-jail to Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad; the process began on Tuesday evening, sources said.

The students wing of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday held a protest here against NEET, reiterating the party's demand for the abolition of the central qualifying test for medical admissions.
The protest, titled "No More NEET" was led by the party's Students Wing Secretary and Kancheepuram MLA, CVMP Ezhilarasan. The protesters were clad in black.

The protest comes days after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed yet another resolution, seeking NEET exemption to the state.
The agitation was also held in the backdrop of the recent irregularities regarding the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test.
The DMK has been opposing NEET for long, claiming it was against social justice and state's rights and has been insisting that marks secured in the class 12 exams should be the criteria for medical admissions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the government is working on a war footing to curb incidents of paper leaks, while asserting that those playing with the future of youngsters will not be spared.
The Prime Minister's comments came amid a raging row over alleged irregularities, including paper leaks, in competitive examinations such as the NEET and the NET. The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue in Parliament.
Replying to a two-day debate on the Motion of Thanks to the president's address to a joint sitting of Parliament, PM Modi said arrests are being made across the country in connection with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) issue.
"The President expressed concerns about paper leaks in her address. I also want to tell students and youngsters that the government is serious about controlling such incidents and we are taking back-to-back steps on a war footing to fulfil our responsibilities," he said.
"Those playing with the future of youngsters will not be spared, arrests are being made across the country in the NEET issue. The Centre has already framed strict laws and important steps are being taken to strengthen the entire system of conducting examinations," the Prime Minister added.

Opposition members on Tuesday cornered the government in the Rajya Sabha over the recent examination paper leaks, saying it is hurting the future of the youths and the morale of students who have toiled hard.
Taking a dig, Raghav Chadha of AAP said that there are two IPLs played in the country - one is the Indian Premier League (IPL) for cricket and the second is Indian Paper Leak (IPL) - and the exam organising agency NTA stands for 'No Trust Anymore'.
While referring to the recent paper leaks of NEET (UG) and NET (UGC), Chadha said an education and exam mafia has emerged that has pushed the future of crores of students in this country into the dark. More than 35 lakh students appeared in these exams.
"India is one of the youngest countries in the world where the average age is 29 years," he said, adding the country has the highest number of students in the world which is around 31 crore.
Chadha said,"There are two IPLs in this country. In the one IPL, the game is played by a ball and bat and there is a second one, where you play with the future of the youths, which is India Paper Leak ." Citing the recent paper leaks, he said this not only breaks the heart but also the morale of a student.
He also raised the issue of unemployment in the country.
"Unemployment in the organised sector is at its peak and there are no data about the unorganised sector," he claimed.

Majority of the pleas filed for NEET UG 2024 alleged irregularities will be heard on July 8, when the Supreme Court reopens after summer recess. Several students, coaching institutes have filed pleas against the NEET UG 2024 result.

According to LiveLaw, the NEET plea will be heard by a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

Student bodies including NSUI, AISF and AISA have announced a nationwide protest on July 3 against the alleged NEET UG paper leaks.

Panchmahal District court transfers NEET UG case proceedings and custody of all accused to CBI court

Over a dozen students were detained while attempting to march towards the Parliament on Tuesday to protest against alleged irregularities in several competitive exams.

The students belonging to different outfits under the banner "India against NTA" gathered at the Patel Chowk metro station here and started raising "anti-NTA" slogans.

Carrying posters and banners with slogans like "sack Union Education Minister" and "NTA must go" written over them, the students staged demonstration against the reported incidents of paper leak and corruption in the medical entrance exam, besides others.
The Delhi Police detained the protesting students while they tried to march towards the Parliament to press their demands.
"After holding a presser at the Press Club, the students gathered at the Patel Chowk metro station from where they started marching towards the Parliament. Over a dozen students were detained while attempting to do so," said a police officer.

Various students outfits under the banner "India against NTA" have been staging an indefinite sit-in at the Jantar Mantar here against alleged rigging in the NTA held examinations -- NEET UG, PG and UGC NET.

Their protest entered its seventh day on Tuesday with a call to take out a march to the Parliament to forward the agitation.

The members of Left backed All India Students Association (AISA) and Delhi University's Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) are among those sitting on the protest.

The students have called for another march for "Sansad Gherao" on Wednesday along with the student outfits of INDIA block parties on the last day of 18th Lok Sabha.

Their demands include scrapping of NTA, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and decentralisation of entrance examinations.

MK Rajya Sabha member P Wilson on Tuesday urged the central government to either abolish medical entrance exam NEET or approve Tamil Nadu's NEET exemption bill to exclude the state from the competitive exam.

His appeal in the Upper House of Parliament came amid a row over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to medical courses. During the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in the Rajya Sabha, he said the state legislative assembly had passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Medical Courses Bill in 2021 and subsequently passed a resolution unanimously against the exam and to address the "NEET menace".

However, the Bill has been pending the "Centre's assent for nearly three years", causing "anxiety" among students and parents, he said.

"We seek the PM's immediate attention to either approve the Bill passed by the state government or bring out amendments to the National Medical Commission Act to abolish the NEET and next exam system at the national level," Wilson stated.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam was taken by around 23.33 lakh students and the alleged irregularities in its conduct, including question paper leak, has led to filing of cases in courts, including the Supreme Court, and an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The probe agency on June 23 filed an FIR in connection with the alleged irregularities in the exam held on May 5 on a reference from the Union education ministry.

The DMK leader also criticised the delay in ordering of the CBI probe, claiming this might have allowed "fraudsters" to tamper with documents and erase evidence.

Wilson also raised concerns about the handling of competitive exams, including the NEET, by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The agency that handles crucial national-level tests is registered under the Societies Registration Act "like any other flat owner or housing society", the DMK leader said.

"From 2014 to 2024, the government has passed 427 Bills in the Lok Sabha and 365 bills in the Rajya Sabha. However, the Union government was not interested in introducing a legislation to provide statutory backing to the NTA," Wilson said and claimed that this lack of a legislation could potentially "shield the agency from accountability".

The DMK has long opposed NEET, having secured a stay from the Madras High Court on its implementation when it was first introduced in 2010 through regulations.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding exemption of NEET for the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo M K Stalin on Friday said that "... we had passed a Bill unanimously in our legislative assembly to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and to provide medical admissions based on 12th standard marks." "This has been sent for Presidential assent but the assent is still pending," he had said and added that the irregularities during the recent NEET exam validated the state's opposition to the exam.

NSUI National President and India Alliance Students Organization today passed a joint resolution condemning NTA, demanding Education Minister's resignation, and vowing united action for students' rights.

Student outfits of the INDIA bloc parties slammed the BJP-led Centre on Tuesday over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG and reiterated their demand that the medical entrance test be held again for all the 24 lakh candidates who had appeared in it.

At a joint press conference here, national leaders of the student outfits, including the Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students' Federation (AISF), along with the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha and the Congress's student wing National Students' Union of India (NSUI), alleged that the future of lakhs of students is in danger due to rigging in the NEET-UG.

The students also demanded the scrapping of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over reported incidents of paper leak and corruption in the exam.

The NTA on Monday released the results of 1,563 candidates who appeared in a re-test to compensate for loss of time as the exam started late at six centres on May 5.

None of the five candidates who scored a perfect 720 marks in the May 5 exam could match their results in the re-test. The number of candidates sharing the top rank in the medical entrance test reduced to 61 from 67 in the revised results.

Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, on Tuesday took out a march to the office of the Accountant General (AG) here in protest against the irregularities in the NEET entrance exam.

Holding up placards, which said 'NEET is not very neat' and 'stop playing with students' lives', the protestors marched to the AG's office where DYFI leaders blamed the Narendra Modi government for the recent problems in connection with the medical entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

They also demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister and a probe into the irregularities.

The protestors raised these demands in front of barricades set up by the police to stop them from getting close to the AG's office.
DYFI state president V Vaseef, in his speech outside the AG's office, claimed that the irregularities in the NEET exam amounts to cheating the students who worked hard to clear it.

He also alleged that there was large-scale corruption in the conduct of the entrance exam.

'The central government should be ready to investigate it,' Vaseef demanded.

He warned of more protest marches across the country till the Centre investigates the irregularities in the conduct of the entrance test.
Last week, the Kerala assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning the irregularities in the NEET and NET entrance exams conducted by the NTA.

The assembly passed a substantive resolution demanding that the Centre take urgent steps to address the grievances of affected candidates and carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the irregularities in the conduct of the entrance exams.

Both the ruling LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF were also in agreement that the recently reported irregularities in the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams call into question the National Testing Agency's (NTA) credibility and its competence to conduct such entrance tests.

The new exam date for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for postgraduate courses (NEET PG) 2024 will not be announced on July 2, but will release this week, a senior official from the National Board of Examinations (NBE) told indianexpress.com.

The students who appeared for the retest can now check their scores at the official website -- exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.

The students, who have been staging a sit-in at the Jantar Mantar, Delhi against the irregularities in NEET UG, PG and UGC NET, have called for a march toward the Parliament today to press their demands.

Opposition members today demanded a separate one-day discussion on the NEET paper leak issue in the Lok Sabha and staged a walkout after they sought a clear assurance from the government on the issue.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of irregularities in NEET soon after the Lok Sabha assembled for the day, prompting Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to assert that a separate discussion cannot be held till the House finishes with the motion of thanks on the president's address. -- PTI

NTA today released the All India Ayush Post Graduate Entrance Examination (AIAPGET) 2024 city intimation slip which mentions the exam centre allotted to candidates. The city intimation can be downloaded from the official website — exams.nta.ac.in/AIAPGET/. 

The CUET UG 2024 result was scheduled to release on June 30, but there has been no official notification on the same. As per NTA sources, the exam’s provisional answer key, in all probability, will only be released this week. After which, the agency will take “a week to 10 days” to release the final results.

While NEET pleas are to be heard on July 8, the Supreme Court has refused to delay the NEET UG counselling which is scheduled to begin on July 6.

Supreme Court will today hear plea alleging involvement of the National Testing Agency (NTA) officers in manipulating the OMR sheets of the NEET UG 2024 exam. The plea is placed before a vacation bench of Justices C.T Ravikumar and Manoj Misra, as per LiveLaw.

"Along with the sanctity of various examinations held from time to time in the country, the current uncertainty, especially regarding medical NEET-UG and PG examinations, has naturally created a wave of restlessness, anxiety and anger among the people, for which it is very important to find a quick and permanent solution.

By the way, the matter of paper leak in examinations held not only in All India but also in states including UP and corruption in government recruitments is a very serious, sad and worrisome matter. Any kind of government negligence or politics towards these problems is not appropriate, rather strict steps are necessary to prevent this," ex-CM of Uttar Pradesh said in a post on 'X'.

Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has requested a day for discussion on the NEET UG 2024 controversy, saying that lives of lakhs of students have been affected. "Parliament sends out a message to students, and we want to send a message to students that the NEET controversy is important," Gandhi said.

The Lok Sabha session resumed today after proceedings were stalled on June 28 amid calls for discussion on alleged NEET UG 2024 paper leak from the Opposition.
