Mazin Mansoor who scored 720/720 marks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 had his ranks revised in the recently announced revised result. He now shares the all India rank with 16 others by obtaining 99.997129 percentile. His all-India rank for counselling in the June 4 result was 1.05, now his rank has improved to 1.03.

It was the 17-year old’s first attempt at NEET UG this year. He comes from a family of doctors. His father, who is a paediatrician, is now working in a government hospital in Saudi Arabia, while his maternal uncle and aunts, paternal and maternal grandfather are all doctors. His brother is also doing BDS at Sarjug Dental College Darbhangha and is now in his fourth year. His motivation to do MBBS and be like them was the sole reason for him in deciding to take NEET UG.

The Indian Express spoke to some of the candidates who appeared for NEET UG 2024 to know how the decision will impact them. “We expected filtration (of the wrongdoers) if not a retest,” says a student when asked about her views on judgment. Another student with a score of 608 said, “In the last two years, I had worked quite hard but ended up not getting what I think I deserved. I think no re-test is an injustice to many.” The girl, who wanted to maintain anonymity, shared concerns with many others that some malpractices during the NEET examination may have gone undetected.

The total number of medical aspirants who qualified the entrance test is 13,15,853. As per data shared by the NTA on July 26, of the total qualified students, as many as 5,46,566 are male students, 7,69,277 are female students and 10 transgender students.

The cut-off this year in the re-revised result for the general category candidates has decreased from 720-164 in the June 4 result to 720-162 now. The all India rank 1 is shared by 17 students. They have scored 99.9992714 percentile.

For the scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward class candidates, the NEET UG cut-off is 161-127. Similarly, the NEET UG 2024 cut off for SC, ST and OBC-PH candidates, the cut off is 143-127.

The NEET cut-off for MBBS and BDS for medical aspirants belonging to the General category is 50th, for OBC, SC and ST candidates, it is 40th. The NTA determines the NEET UG percentile on the basis of the highest marks scored in the all-India common merit list in NEET UG 2024.

The number of NEET UG toppers has not decreased to 17 from 67.

The Ministry of Education also said that it has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities including conspiracy, breach, and cheating in NEET UG 2024 and formed a high-level committee to recommend reforms in the exam system and functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The NTA has NTA released revised scorecard, final answer key. 

The Supreme Court on Monday said the initial statements of some of the accused arrested in the NEET-UG case indicated that a “leak” may have occurred on the night of May 4, on the eve of the exam, but no evidence had been placed before it so far to establish that the breach was widespread, so as to warrant cancellation of the exam.

The SC also directed the director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, to set up a committee of three experts “to formulate an opinion on the correct option” to a multiple choice question in the exam, for which marks were awarded for two options. The SC sought a report on the correct answer by Tuesday noon.

Delivering its ruling on a clutch of petitions seeking cancellation of the exam, the Bench said: “We are of the considered view that ordering the cancellation of the entire NEET-UG 2024 examination is neither justified on the application of the settled tests which have been propounded in the decisions of this court, nor on the basis of the material on the record.”

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down demands for cancellation of the NEET-UG 2024, saying that “at the present stage, there is absence of sufficient material on record to lead to the conclusion that result of the… examination stands vitiated or that there is a systemic breach to the sanctity of the examination”.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra also asked the National Testing Agency (NTA) to revise the NEET-UG results by correcting the error of awarding marks for two options to a Physics multiple choice question, and asked it to treat only one — option 4 — as the correct answer.

Keeping in line with the directions of the Supreme Court, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to issue a revised merit list for the NEET undergraduate examination, a move that will affect 44 exam toppers who may see their ranks slip by at least 88 positions, if not more, The Indian Express has learned.

In the results announced on June 4, there were a record 67 candidates who had scored a perfect 720 marks and tied for the top spot. Of these, six topped due to being compensated with extra marks for time lost during the examination because of mistakes made by invigilators. Apart from that, as many as 44 made it to the top because they got an answer to a basic physics question wrong and received “grace marks” for it.

As the NEET paper leak has been admitted by both the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Supreme Court, some students raised concerns of improper filtration of malpractice. While the Court stated that the CBI investigation will continue and action will be taken corresponding to any new findings, students fear that any malpractice that has potentially gone undetected so far is still a compromise of the fairness of there NEET result.

While the nervousness around further revelation persists, students are also worried about the impact of the markings of the ambiguous question on there result. Another student who obtained 608 marks in NEET results declared on June 4, who wished to remain unnamed told The Indian Express: “I will lose 5 marks, which means a total of 603. This means my rank will fall and I might not get admission to a good college.”

The Supreme Court ruled out the demand for a re-test of the NEET UG 2024 on Tuesday on the grounds of insufficient evidence of a systemic failure of the examination. Moreover, IIT-Delhi confirmed option 4 as the right answer to the controversial Physics question. This entails two primary consequences, first, the marks obtained by the candidates in the NEET-UG exam conducted on May 5 will be retained, however, the marks and in turn, the corresponding ranks would be reshuffled after the necessary changes in the result.

The Central Bureau of Investigation in a statement on Thursday denied speculative and false reports in a section of the media on NEET-UG examination paper leak case.

In the statement, the agency said that CBI has come across reports in a section of media about CBI investigation of NEET 2024 Examination case which have been speculative, misinformed and false. It is advised that publication of such reports may be completely avoided as that creates unfounded web of misinformation/opinions. This is not only harmful to the esteemed readers/audience in particular, but also to the society in general.

CBI has a formal mechanism of sharing information through its office of Chief Information Officer and does share required information from time to time keeping in mind the interest and integrity of investigation. It is therefore advised that only the information shared by CBI through its official mechanism may be relied upon, it reads.

CBI has been investigating into the allegations of theft and leakage of NEET UG 2024 Question paper since June 23 this year, after taking over the Case registered at Shastrinagar Police Station (Patna), Bihar.

The Ministry of Education also said that it has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities including conspiracy, breach, and cheating in NEET UG 2024 and formed a high-level committee to recommend reforms in the exam system and functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA).

All the first-year Delhi University students enrolled in first-year undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes as well as foreign students seeking admission from the 2024-2025 academic session will observe a hike in the fees of their respective colleges.

The new fee structure for the academic calendar that begins in August was approved by Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh in June. Speaking with indianexpress.com Singh said, “It is a usual hike in the fees done by DU colleges and every year we raise the fee by 5-6 per cent to meet the inflation.”

A delegation of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday met the chairman of the Centre's high-level exam reform panel and submitted its suggestions on improving the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA), a statement said.

In a letter submitted to panel chairperson K Radhakrishnan, the students' union suggested conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) in two phases like the JEE, developing advanced infrastructure for holding exams, setting up exam centres at government institutions and adequate staffing of permanent employees at NTA.

The ABVP also underlined the need for administrative reforms within the NTA to ensure transparency in exams and restoring students' confidence in the agency. It suggested that OMR sheets of the paper should be uploaded on the NTA website.

"Over the past two weeks, the ABVP has consulted students from diverse disciplines such as humanities, medical sciences, engineering and others and compiled 42 suggestions for reforming the National Testing Agency. These suggestions have now been submitted to the high-level committee overseeing NTA reforms," ABVP national general secretary Yagywalkya Shukla said.

"It is crucial to promptly resolve the issues plaguing the NTA to restore trust in its examination processes. We hope that the committee will take decisive action based on the ABVP's recommendations," he said.

The Centre has set up the seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief Radhakrishnan to make recommendations on reforms in the examination process, enhancing data security protocols, and reviewing the structure and operations of the NTA.

The panel was set up following reports of alleged irregularities in some competitive exams conducted by the NTA.

While NEET-UG is under the scanner for several irregularities, including an alleged paper leak, UGC-NET was cancelled after the Ministry of Education received inputs that the integrity of the exam was compromised. Two other exams -- CSIR-UGC NET and NEET PG -- were cancelled as a pre-emptive step. The NTA later announced fresh dates for some of these exams.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Thursday demanded the scrapping of NEET UG and reinstatement of the "old system" of medical admissions. "The irregularities in the All-India NEET-UG Medical Examination is a serious issue and has reached Parliament and the Supreme Court. Whatever be the result, the pain and mental agony caused to lakhs of candidates and their families will always haunt them," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said on X.

"The Centre has failed to assure the people that it can conduct such an important exam properly, which has made the problem more serious. Therefore, why not end the centralised NEET UG-PG exam and reinstate the old system, as is the demand of many state governments," she said in the post in Hindi.

This year, as many as 24,06,079 candidates registered for NEET UG this year and of them, 23,33,297 appeared. The total number of aspirants who qualified the medical entrance test was 13,16,268. According to data shared by the NTA on June 4, of the total qualified students, 5,47,036 were male students, 7,69,222 were female students and 10 were transgender students. NEET UG 2024 registrations saw an increase of 16.85 per cent this year. Last year, the number of registered NEET UG candidates was 20.59 lakh.

The cut-off this year for the general and general-PH category candidates has increased from 720-137 last year to 720-164. 

For the scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward class candidates, the NEET UG 2024 cut-off has increased to 163-129 from 136-107 last year. Similarly, the NEET UG 2024 cut off for SC, ST and OBC-PH candidates, the cut off has increased from 120-107 last year to 145-129 this year. As many as 11,65,904 students in the UR/ EWS category have been placed in the 50th percentile category.

On Tuesday, after the Supreme Court verdict, Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters that the NTA would release a new merit list in two days. Welcoming the Supreme Court’s rejection of the demands for cancelling NEET-UG, Pradhan said: “Truth prevails, we welcome the order of the Supreme Court. We have said from the beginning, our priority is the students of the country… over the past two months, the government’s stand has been that there has been no large-scale breach. Today, in the Supreme Court, this was shown to be right.”

SC holds there is no evidence on record to conclude that NEET-UG 2024 was “vitiated” on account of “systemic breach” of its sanctity.
- SC, instead of reserving the judgement, dictates operative parts and says there is an urgent need to provide certainty and finality to the dispute which affects the career of over 2 million students.
- SC says data on record is not indicative of a systemic leak of question paper which would indicate a disruption of the sanctity of the examination.
