24 years of Hum Saath Saath Hain: Saif Ali Khan found the film ‘exhausting,’ Madhuri Dixit rejected Tabu’s role because of Salman Khan

Madhuri said that she couldn’t turn down any film by Barjatya, so she discussed with him about her potential role in the movie. She also explained that she couldn’t play the roles of Karisma Kapoor and Sonali Bendre, after Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Ultimately, he offered her the role of the eldest daughter-in-law, which Tabu later essayed. But, Madhuri rejected the role due to a specific scene.

Madhuri thought it would be hard to form a “bhabhi-dewar” relationship with Salman, whom she romanced in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. She said, “There is a scene in the film where Salman touches Tabu’s feet and he hugs Tabu. So there has to be this bhabhi-devar feeling between the two. But if you put me in Tabu’s place and visualise Salman touching my feet… I think people would have hooted in the theatres. And I think it’s right… because of HAHK, which was a love story between Salman and me.” Hence, Madhuri opted out of the movie.

Hum Saath Saath Hain was centered around a joint family, who grew apart after a misunderstanding. Saif, Salman and Mohnish played brothers in the film.

In one of his interviews, Saif had said that doing the film was “exhausting” for him. In an interview with Mid-Day, Saif had said, “That was my Krishna. A little naughty version. Salman was the Ram character. I found it exhausting. Apart from Laal Kaptaan, one of the most tiring things to do. I had to be so happy and positive all the time. It killed me, I am just not like that at all. Sooraj ji used to say constantly ‘do it your way, but smile.’”
