Despite boasting a star-studded cast of Bollywood A-listers and being the fifth instalment in director Rohit Shetty’s blockbuster Cop Universe franchise, the recent actioner Singham Again had failed in the 2024 Diwali box office showdown, losing out to the horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Featuring Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor and Jackie Shroff in key roles, and Salman Khan in a cameo, Singham Again managed to earn only Rs 372.4 crore globally against a reported budget of Rs 350 crore, while Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 delivered a stronger performance, grossing Rs 389.28 crore worldwide on a relatively smaller budget of Rs 150 crore.

Among the various criticisms Singham Again received, the most significant was against its poor writing and overreliance on the Hindu epic Ramayana, which many felt made the narrative lack originality and impact.

While attending the Zee Real Heroes Awards 2025 recently, Ajay Devgn — who played the titular cop Bajirao Singham — was asked about the film’s shortcomings, specifically about the absence of the powerful sequences and commanding presence that had defined his character in the earlier instalments. Not only were the action sequences in the movie underwhelming but fans felt that the character lacked his usual flair.

“I think yeh reaction mujhe kaafi logon se aaya. Toh aage dhyaan rakhenge ki woh jo Singham ka feel tha – ghus ghus ke maarne ka – woh aage zaroor rahega (I think I received this feedback from many people. So, going forward, we will make sure that the essence of Singham — the intense, in-your-face action — will definitely be present),” he shared.

In her review of the movie, SCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote, “It’s all so same-old in Ajay Devgn-Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again that even the new locations don’t help. Neither does all the blatant-referencing-and-copy-pasting of Ramayan.”
