Amid Emergency’s censor troubles, Gippy Grewal demands Sikh representation in CBFC: ‘To check things from a religious perspective’

Gippy Grewal, who is currently promoting his film Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di, recently said that a Sikh member must be included in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Gippy insisted that having a Sikh person on the board will help in certification of films that represent the community. A few days ago, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee also made a similar demand.

Gippy said that the CBFC can flag some flaws, but they cannot identify misrepresentation of a religion. Gippy’s comments came in while Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has been stuck at the CBFC for allegedly misrepresenting the Sikh community. Gippy shot his upcoming film at Hazur Sahib in Maharashtra and he says he showed the film to the committee of the gurudwara, who then gave him an NOC. He said that he attached the NOC as he sent the film for certification.

He shared with India Today, “We showed ‘Ardaas’ to the Hazur Sahib Prabhandhak Committee first and took an NOC from them before sending the film to the censor board. The board can check on the larger things, but it is important for an expert member to check the things from a religious perspective.” He added, “Having a Sikh representative in the board is important for films which talk about Sikhism, represent the community or represent the state of Punjab in any form.”

A few days ago, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee demanded a ban on Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency and asked for Sikh representation on the CBFC board. “It is very important to include a Sikh member in the Central Film Censor Board, as unilateral decisions are being taken only because of the absence of a Sikh member. The Shiromani Committee has passed resolutions several times in its general meeting demanding that a representative of Sikhs must be included in the Central Film Censor Board, but it is a pity that the government is not implementing it. It is very important to ban this film because it is natural that the release of this film will create a lot of anger and resentment in the Sikh community (sic).”

Meanwhile, Kangana’s film is still awaiting clearance from CBFC. The film was scheduled to release on September 6 but has now been postponed.
