The last time they met on-screen, love was in the air. This time, there are bullets. Netflix’s upcoming series Guns & Gulaabs can best be used to paint a ‘then and now’ scenario for actors Rajkummar Rao and Gulshan Devaiah, who reunite for filmmaker Raj and DK’s latest retro crime comedy.
In Badhaai Do, Gulshan and Rajkummar charmed the audience with their chemistry as they played lovers on-screen. A year later, they are after each other’s life in the series Guns & Gulaabs. Ahead of the release of the seven-episode series, Gulshan teased Indianexpress.com on what to expect from him and Raj on the show and quipped, “Sparks flew there, now there will be a proper fire!”

Set in the ‘90s, Guns & Gulaabs follows a lovestruck mechanic Paana Tipu (played by Rajkummar), a reluctant heir to a ruling gang, an honest officer-turned-agent-of-chaos and a menacing killer chaar-cut Atmaram (Gulshan).
Their track in Badhaai Do–as a queer lawyer and a tough cop falling in love–became a major highlight of the film and Rajkummar said their secret is that both of them believe in genuinely giving their all to a performance and responding to each other’s energies.
“As actors, whatever part we are given we do that with full sincerity and honesty. That’s what both of us believe in. Even in Badhaai Do, we were playing our parts very sincerely. Feeding off each other,” Rajkummar said to which Gulshan added, “And that’s why it worked!”
Rajkummar Rao noted that they don’t approach their scenes with any underlined insecurity or the attempt to one up each other. “Whenever you do that, there is no hidden motive, those stupid ideas that, ‘Main ikso khaa jauga‘ (I will be better than him in the performance). You should just do it nicely, for the scene, for the film and it will always shine through,” Rajkummar added.
Gulshan Devaiah said co-incidentally both Badhaai Do and Guns & Gulaabs were shot in Dehradun, giving them a sense of returning to the ground where their love began. “We didn’t shoot it simultaneously, but it was Dehradun. So it was like, ‘Oooh we are back together again! But this time, it is not going to be a love scene like it was the last time!'”
Also starring Dulquer Salmaan, Adarsh Gourav, TJ Bhanu, Pooja Gor and the late Satish Kaushik, Guns & Gulaabs is billed as a story that depicts “love and innocence”, though it is set in a world of crime. Guns & Gulaabs will premiere on Netflix on August 18.
