IMDb declares Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan as 2023’s most popular films, ahead of Vijay’s Leo and Rajinikanth’s Jailer

The year 2023 is coming to an end and unlike the last few years, which did not see many Indian films working at the box office, this became the year when the audience was back in theatres after the pandemic. In 2020, when the theatres shut down due to Covid-19, movies started releasing directly on streaming platforms but after a few dull years at the box office, 2023 saw multiple big hits with Jawan and Pathaan creating history for Indian cinema.

As per IMDb, the list of ‘Top 10 Most Popular Indian Movies of 2023 (Theatrical)’ is led by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan, which released in September, and has emerged as the biggest grosser of the year. Pathaan, which was the first big hit of the year, also starring SRK is the second on this list, followed by Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh.

Vijay-starrer Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj is the fourth on the list, followed by Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi-starrer OMG 2, which released amidst much controversy. Rajinikanth’s Jailer is sixth on this list, followed by Sunny Deol’s comeback vehicle Gadar 2. The Kerala Story, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Bholaa hold the last three spots.

In the streaming world, many films still opted for a direct-to-digital release and here, IMDb’s ‘Top 10 Most Popular Indian Movies of 2023 (Streaming)’ list was topped by Netflix’s Lust Stories 2. The anthology of four short stories was directed by R Balki, Amit Sharma, Konkona Sensharma and Sujoy Ghosh. The second and third spot was also held by Netflix releases Jaane Jaan, starring Kareena Kapoor, and Mission Majnu, starring Sidharth Malhotra, respectively.

Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Bawaal, which also generated some controversy after its release, held the fourth spot followed by Sunny Kaushal and Yami Gautam-starrer Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. Shahi Kapoor-starrer Bloody Daddy, which was available for free on Jio Cinemas from the day of its release held the fifth spot followed by Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai. Sara Ali Khan-starrer Gaslight, Sanya Malhotra-starrer Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery and Radhika Apte-starrer Mrs Undercover got the last three spots.
