Farah Khan recently visited filmmaker Kabir Khan’s house in Mumbai along with her cook Dilip for a special vlog. While the two as usual entertained their fans with their fun banter, Farah’s vlog also gave a glimpse of the director and his wife Mini Mathur’s earthy home in Mumbai.

Their house, made of two apartments is an amalgamation of two very different backgrounds as Mini comes from Delhi and Kabir from Hyderabad. The couple has done their own interiors without relying on an architect or designer. Both having lived in Delhi have brought a similar charm to their house with an aangan like living room and open kitchen. Both Kabir and Mini, being big time travellers have taken inspiration from the places they have travelled to, Greece being their favourite. Their house is decorated with coloured chandeliers and rustic show pieces, giving a very vintage look to their house.

All the edges of their house is round and filled with colours. Speaking to Asian Paints, Mini Mathur once said, “As you can see there is no particular theme as we have tried to create a little bit of us everywhere.”

Their living room has an 85-year-old table from Kabir Khan’s ancestral house in Hyderabad. “Kabir and I like everything that looks old. Even if we bought it new it can’t be like sparkling shining new.” Their sofas are handmade with lotus root. Their living room also has a distressed bookcase, which looks extremely antique.

Kabir Khan and Mini Mathur looked for several apartments after Mini rejected her current apartment before buying it. However, after looking at a lot of other properties they circled back to this apartment realising “its charm lies in it crookedness.”

Talking to Asian Paints, Kabir said, “Now what people find very charming are these Santorini seats. But these seats are basically to come flush the pipes running over and that is what we used to our advantage.”

The couple also owns an open terrace which is decorated with a boat like table and some fancy chairs. Sharing the story behind the boat, Mini said, “I am going to the airport and I see this half boat in a studio there. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is tailor made to keep my dog stuff.’ Now the boat has dog food, dog toys and dog grooming things. It is all hidden. Works well.”

Mini has also created a little tea ambience in her house after being inspired by British tea rooms. Her kitchen too is stuffed with all rustic and vintage things, making it an interesting place to cook while also getting to interact with her guests.

Kabir and Mini have also split a single room into two for their kids, Vivaan and Sairah. Mini has kept one corner of the house for herself, which she paints every season as per her mood. It is currently coloured in blue.

Mini said, “I want this space to be that house when somebody comes and spills a coke they don’t have to feel apologetic or feel weird. This is the house that spills a lot of things and it’s okay.”
