Besides being frequent collaborators, director Anurag Kashyap and veteran actor Piyush Mishra also share a close personal bond marked by candour. While the two have never minced words when sharing their opinions, no matter the topic, they maintain a similar level of straightforwardness with each other as well. A few days back, Piyush shocked many when he said he disliked the second halves of quite a few films helmed by Anurag, including those they collaborated on. Astoundingly, he made this remark with the director by his side, emphasising their unique equation.

In a recent interview, Anurag opened up about their relationship, noting that even criticisms

directed at one another come from a place of compassion. “He loves me. He also gets upset when I react,” the director shared during a chat with News18. “He tells me, ‘Kyun? Just stop!’ He cautions me that he wasted his life reacting to things and that I shouldn’t become like him.”

Not just with Piyush, the legendary filmmaker shares a similar bond with actor Manoj Bajpayee, another one of his frequent collaborators, too. He added, “When I do or say something, Manoj tells me, ‘Yaar, tum kyun karte ho aise? (Dude, why do you do such things?)’ He has lived through life and is a very practical person.” Nonetheless, Anurag shared that Manoj has his back no matter what. “I know he’ll protect me. That’s the kind of relationship I’ve with all of my friends. Manoj toh bade hai, he’s like an elder brother to me, even though he looks ten times younger than me. He’s somebody who has always looked out for me. He gives me the most honest advice,” the filmmaker added.

In a joint interview on the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel, Piyush mentioned that although he watches Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) once in a while, he totally avoids Gulaal (2009). He said, “I’m sorry, Anurag, I know I’m in the film, but I didn’t get the film’s second half. I have no idea what you did. That’s his problem. He makes half a good movie, then he spoils it. It’s like he can’t believe that he’s made such a good movie. He thinks, ‘Wow, this is a good movie, lets ruin it. Let’s make a rubbish second half’. That’s his problem. Gulaal was a good movie, and he went and spoiled it.”

Piyush added, “He’s done this to all his films. Look at Dev D. The first half was a classic, and then he ruined it. I don’t know what his problem is. Gangs of Wasseypur had the same issue; he made the first part, then he lost his mind. I thought Dev D would be a film on alcoholism, and then it became something strange.”
