Rajpal Yadav opens up about his time in jail, reveals he conducted workshops for prisoners: ‘Those who had no urge to do anything in life, started smiling’
Rajpal Yadav thanked the film industry for not doubting him when he was given three-months jail sentence. He added that he came out of that low phase of his life stronger.

In 2018, Rajpal Yadav served a three-month jail sentence for defaulting on a Rs 5 crore loan he had taken in 2010 to produce the film, Ata Pata Laapata. Opening up about the same, the actor said that he had never discussed this incident publicly before and revealed that after being released from jail, he had a positive impact on a senior jail official who was inspired by his attitude. Rajpal said that he also conducted workshops for fellow inmates during his time in jail.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Rajpal said that he takes insults in stride and expressed gratitude towards the film industry for not doubting him. He said, “People would have judged me if I was confused. I knew I would come out 100 times stronger and better because I have come out of the low phases of my life as a phoenix.”
The actor continued, “After three months, when I was leaving from there (jail), the jail superintendent and the staff gave me two certificates instead of one. He said, ‘This place is very historic and in my whole life I have not seen someone like you. We got inspired by you. We thought we would hear your complaints every day, but in these three months you have made the walls alive.’”
Rajpal also shared that he held workshops inside the jail for people who had no interest in acting or even anything in life. “I gathered all the prisoners, I took permission and conducted workshops. On the second day of the workshop, those who had no urge to even go for a walk or do anything in life were smiling. People who had no direction in life, started acting.”
The actor’s lively personality impressed the officials and were all praise of Rajpal. He said that one of them also told him that he was motivated to get up every morning and go for a walk and exercise after looking at Rajpal.
On the work front, Rajpal will reunite with Akshay Kumar for the comedy-drama, Welcome To The Jungle.
