Roshan Mathew says Ulajh co-star Gulshan Devaiah’s ‘didn’t vibe’ with Janhvi Kapoor comment was ‘refreshing’: ‘Pressure to put…’

Gulshan Devaiah had confessed that he 'didn't 'vibe' with Janhvi Kapoor on Ulajh, but complimented her for being a professional, who didn't let that get in the way of their performance.

The word of the month, as far as Bollywood interviews go, is ‘vibing’. Days after actor Gulshan Devaiah surprised his Ulajh co-star Janhvi Kapoor by revealing that he didn’t “vibe” with her while working on the upcoming thriller, their co-star actor Roshan Mathew reflected on the candid truth bomb and said it was a departure from the all is well narrative that usually actors put up during promotions.

In an interview with Film Companion, Gulshan Devaiah had confessed that he didn’t ‘vibe’ with Janhvi Kapoor on Ulajh, but complimented her for being a professional, who didn’t let that get in the way of their performance. “It is not like

we are sitting and chatting, we don’t vibe at all. I don’t think she finds me funny, interesting or anything like that,” he had said.

In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Roshan Mathew said Gulshan was “extremely articulate” and added, “It was a wonderful line! The amount of candour was so refreshing! We have somehow set this standard that when we are promoting a film, we all have to pretend that we love each other and only have good things to talk about each other.

“I have always noticed that we never get to properly answer the question ‘what were the difficulties you faced at shoot’, because we feel the pressure to put a positive sheen on everything.”

While Gulshan’s “didn’t vibe” with Janhvi line quickly caught on, Roshan said what was “great” about his answer was the point he made after, where he had complimented Janhvi and noted that despite not vibing, they got the job done as she was a “professional”. Roshan said, “For anybody who interpreted that as they didn’t get along at all, that’s unfortunate and unfair. Because that’s not what he meant.”

Roshan Mathew, who has previously starred in Darlings headlined by Alia Bhatt and Anurag Kashyap’s Choked, said he “really” vibed with Janhvi and said the two bonded well while shooting the Sudhanshu Saria directorial.

“But yes, Janhvi and I really vibed! Right from when we started our rehearsals, and since most of my scenes were with her, we spent a lot of time prepping for the film. There was a comfortable friendship with her. I started shooting Ulajh after Janhvi had begun the film, and I had to begin with a long tricky scene. It was a stressful night and, in such situations, you tend to bond even more! I really enjoyed my shoot with Janhvi,” he added.

Written by Parveez Shaikh and Sudhanshu Saria, with dialogues by Atika Chauhan, Ulajh also stars Adil Hussain, Rajesh Tailang, Meiyang Chang, Rajendra Gupta, and Jitendra Joshi. The film is set to release on August 2.
