Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu reflects on her career with a remarkable self-awareness, stating that the roles she has been able to take up recently is a result of finding herself in the “calmest” phase of her professional life. The actor, who was one of the biggest Telugu stars since her debut in 2010, branched out to a wider audience with Pushpa’s “Oo Antava” track, followed by The Family Man season two, directed by Raj and DK.

She reunites with the filmmaker-duo on their latest actioner Citadel: Honey Bunny, featuring as a fearless spy agent. In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Samantha opened up about how she is at a stage in her career where, today, she is keen to take on bigger, stronger roles — something which wasn’t possible a decade ago.

“When I started, I didn’t even know I wanted to be an actor, I always wanted to study. So, to just find my space in this big world, it took me quite a few years, to work through all the insecurities, all the questions, ‘Am I good enough?’ The question that if I was ready to take on more heavy-duty stuff, that didn’t occur to me till a few years ago, because until then I was trying to cement my position,” Samantha said.

The actor, who in the last few years has battled an intensely scrutinized divorce with actor husband Naga Chaitanya and then opened up about being diagnosed with an autoimmune medical condition called myositis, feels she is in far more control of her professional life today, not succumbing to the “demons” in her head.

“It takes you a while. The last couple of years of my career has been the calmest. I am actually able to make logical, practical, creative decisions without all the demons in my head playing games. I am jealous of actors who are way more rooted and know what they want, know themselves really well early on in their career. I am truly jealous.”

Samantha said it is “empowering” to take on a powerful role like that in Citadel, which places women in the center of storytelling and not reduce them as damsel in distress, with men doing all the heavy-lifting.

“I feel more responsible now at this stage of my career for the roles I am picking. I want them to represent women in society. More often than not the characters are a misrepresentation of women. The women of today have changed pre-conceived notions and somehow we are still in the past. Only lately has there been a shift in representation and the fact that Citadel universe has strong female characters is a welcome change,” she added.
