Actor Vineet Kumar Singh, who played Danish Khan, son of Sardar Khan (essayed by Manoj Bajpayee), in Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, makes a comeback in another crime-drama-thriller helmed by Kashyap. In Ugly, which hits theatres today, Singh plays a two-faced, wicked and cunning casting director, embroiled in the web of an abduction mess. Ugly has been screened at many International film festivals, including Cannes Film Festival.
After a long and gruelling struggle in Bollywood, Vineet Kumar Singh seems to have found his forte with radical new-age film makers. His work has been applauded not only in India but also at prestigious International film festivals. He has also acted in Shorts, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Isaaq and Bombay Talkies. In Bombay Talkies, he has played the main lead in Murabba, directed by Kashyap.
Gangs of Wasseypur turned out to be the turning point in his career, says Vineet Kumar Singh. Talking about his role in Ugly, he says that to get into the skin of Chaitanya Mishra, the casting director, he had several sessions with the casting directors of Mumbai. He had conversations during auditions, researched on their struggle, thought process, failures, successes and overall behavior. “Chaitanya makes Bhojpuri and sleazy B-grade movies for survival. He comes to Mumbai to become an actor, but ends up as a casting director,”he says.
While shooting a scene where Chaitanya is taken in remand by police, Vineet says he went through more than 50 slaps, handcuffs on wrists and was tied to the roof (with hanging support) to represent the actual 3rd degree torture and intimidation on screen. He says Anurag Kashyap kept an eye on all characters of the movie lest he ended up repeating in his yet another crime-drama-thriller. For Vineet’s character, Anurag Kashyap asked the actor to grow his beard, hair and moustache. Interestingly, Vineet has also contributed to the title track of the film. He has penned a song and sung it too.
Vineet Kumar Singh’s forthcoming films include Aur Devdas, a new-age adaptation of Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhayay, directed by Sudhir Mishra, and Bollywood Diaries by a new director. Vineet Kumar Singh says today he is happy that his dream to become an actor has come to fruition. The actor is also in the process of signing more projects.
