Actor Vikrant Massey, who was last seen in the sleeper hit 12th Fail, said that he will not let money dictate his future choices, and that he wants to continue telling stories about common people. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 12th Fail emerged as a word-of-mouth hit towards the end of last year, grossing nearly Rs 60 crore worldwide at a time when mid-budget films aren’t even getting theatrical releases.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Vikrant said that the film’s success shouldn’t create a scenario where he misuses the privilege that he has been given. “The idea is to not misuse your privilege. Today, we sit in a place of privilege. Always wanted to act in the movies, and here we are, working with some of the best people. But the idea is to go out there and represent the common man, and not to misuse your privilege,” he said.
Vikrant continued, “It’s such an influential… You can’t take your privilege for granted. You can’t get complacent, you can’t believe, even for a moment, (that you’ve made it). The idea is to be as honest and hard working as you can be… One very basic example would be to not go out there and do a film for the heck of money. I don’t think I can do that, it doesn’t come naturally to me.”
Vikrant got his start in the television industry, where he established himself and emerged as a highly paid actor. He gave it up to start a career in films around a decade ago, but after many stops and stars, delivered his first box office success as a leading man only last year. He said in an old interview with ETimes that most of his female co-stars have been paid more than him. “My big body of work does not give me as much money as a Deepika Padukone of course,” he said.
Vikrant will next be seen in the film The Sabarmati Report, due on May 3.
