It was difficult getting the speech defects right: Shahid
The promos have made people curious about Shahids double role and Priyanka Chopras deglamorised avatar.
The song Dhan te nan has taken over the radio and ring tones. The film promos have made people curious about Shahid Kapoors double role and Priyanka Chopras deglamorised avatar. While nervousness and last-minute jitters have hit the cast and crew, especially after the Censor Board gave it an A certificate,Kapoor sounds excited about Kaminey.
He has reasons to. The film releases on August 14 with around 1,100 prints, which officially makes it his biggest release. He also believes that this has been his most challenging role and possibly even the best double role he has ever seen. Both my characters have speech defects. Charlie has a lisp and says sa for fa which Guddu stammers. It was quite difficult to get both right, he says.
The film required Kapoor to research on people with speech disability. Our aim was to understand not only the medical reasons why and how these happen but also the psychological aspects what people with these impediments feel, what they have to go through emotionally. We met with some stammering clubs in Bandra and interacted with them extensively. One of the scenes in the movie is,in fact, inspired by such a meeting. A guy told us an incident from his life. Vishal [Bhardwaj was so moved by this that he made it a part of the film, says Kapoor.
Speech defects like stammering are often associated with comic roles in Hindi films, but Kaminey stays out of it. We made sure it did not turn out to be a mockery of any sort. I have played the characters in all seriousness, says Kapoor. He even asked people with speech disability what they thought of his playing such a role. They said they we genuinely happy that a hero was doing this, not comedic actors, he says.
Its a little difficult to understand why both the heroes need to have speech disabilities. No one is normal in the film. Not one person walks or talks normally. So it all just fits in really well, Kapoor explains. Playing a double role was a challenge, but also fun. There is an intense scene where both the brothers are talking to each other. Since I am playing the two brothers I was pretty much alone in the room emoting for one character and then the other.
Of both the characters,Kapoor says,Guddu was a lot difficult to play. The tough part of being Charlie was the place it was shot, chuckles the actor. Charlie lives in an old,broken-down rail yard. Bhardwaj, known for realism in his films, decided that he didnt want to build any sets for Charlies home and shot at a yard. The place stank so badly that it was difficult to act, Kapoor reveals.
Not what the teasers reveal,Mr Kapoor.
