The world is still grappling with the demise of Friends star Matthew Perry. An Emmy-nominated actor, who used humour as a defense mechanism both on and off-screen, Perry’s portrayal of the iconic Chandler Bing in the legendary 90s sitcom Friends brought immense joy and much-needed laughter to countless fans.

Celebrities worldwide are mourning the untimely passing of the star, and Perry’s former girlfriend, Gwyneth Paltrow, has also joined the masses, expressing her profound sorrow over the loss of the special friend with whom she once shared “a magical summer”.

Mentioning that they both spent most of the summer there performing in plays, she described him as exceptionally funny, sweet and fun to be with. “We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass. It was a magical summer,” she recalled.

Paltrow further added that this occurred shortly after he filmed the pilot of Friends, although the show had not yet been aired. “He was nervous, hoping his big break was just around the corner. It was,” she mentioned.

“We stayed friends for a while until we drifted apart, but I was always happy to see him when I did. I am super sad today, as so many of us are. I hope Matthew is at peace at long last. I really do,” the actor concluded.

“Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend,” Matthew Perry’s family said in a statement published by People magazine. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love,” they added.

Matthew Perry’s presence across ten seasons of Friends solidified his status as one of Hollywood’s most familiar faces. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer, portraying a member of a close-knit friend group in New York.

In Friends, Perry played Chandler, the quick-witted, insecure and neurotic roommate of LeBlanc’s Joey and a close friend of Schwimmer’s Ross. During the show’s hijinks, he could be counted on to chime in with a line like “Could this BE any more awkward?” or another well-timed quip, Associated Press recalled in a report.

Singer Adele, Maggie Wheeler, known for her role as Janice on Friends, and a number of Indian actors, including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Samantha Ruth Prabu, Abhishek Bachchan, Venkatesh, and Kiara Advani, were among those who expressed their shock at the tragic news of Matthew Perry’s passing.
