The grand premiere of Kaun Bangega Crorepati Season 8, was nothing short of a spectacle in an open ground in Surat. However, does a quiz show demand such grandeur, is the question to be asked. To begin with, the show has been revamped
in several ways. The gameshow was interspersed with comical interludes by Kapil Sharma, Meiyang Chang, Neeti Mohan and Anirudh Dave. Faisal Khan, from the show Bharat Ka Veer Putra Maharana Pratap also performed on the instrumental version of a Jodha Akbar track. CID’s popular sleuths, Abhijeet and Daya, also came up with a comic act along with Sharma. But the cherry on the cake was a medley of Bachchan’s song playing in the background, that heralded Big B’s mega entry. He also shook a leg with Sharma as he ascended on the dais. Dressed in a light blue suit with a silver collar, Bachchan looked every inch the suave and dapper superstar, full of energy, while remaining true to his trademark KBC phrases like ‘Computer ji’.
The spectacular premiere broke all conventional notions that one might have when it comes to quiz shows. With its previous seasons and its long standing association with the superstar, the show had already ramped up the glamour quotient. This time, the seriousness of the show has been slightly toned down with a lot of entertainment being added to it. Having Kapil on the premiere along with Big B may have been a smart move however, not all the entertainment was relevant for the show.
The format has been slightly altered to keep up with the times. On an exciting note, the price money has been increased to a whopping 7 crore. The expert advice lifeline has been changed to ‘Triguni’ where there is now a panel of three experts to help you breeze your way through tough questions. Another interesting aspect was Code Red where the contestant’s family could simply press a buzzer, indicating they would want the relative to quit the show. In all, Big B is back with a bang, but whether KBC 8 will be able to sustain the high entertainment standards it has set with the premiere, is left to be seen. Also, adding humour to a quiz show might not be the best decision.

Verdict: Kapil Sharma’s comic act, interspersed with the quiz show was entertaining.
