Zed Plus centers around a coalition government that is failing miserably to govern the state, but is ridden by problems and how the Prime Minister’s solution seems to lie in visiting a dargah where he meets a puncturewala who is given Zed security! Undoubtedly, expectations from Zed Plus’s music will be high, given that Dr. Chandra Prakash’s Pinjar contained music which further enhanced the film, making it an emotive experience. Its music was not merely inserted, but was in fact in sync with the film’s theme.
This film’s plot itself tells you that the music will be predominantly ethnic. Just like many mainstream films, the film has a qawwali titled Ishq ishq. This love song has been sung and composed by Sukhwinder Singh. The song consists of folk influences and Sufi notes and number gives you the feeling of being in a dargah. Some portions of it have been shot there while other shots include the courtyard featuring the resplendent Mona Singh while some other parts have been filmed in the deserts of Rajasthan. While the song has been composed well, it’ll primarily find its fans among those who enjoy folk music. Last heard in Happy budday from Kill Dil, Singh is known for adding a rustic touch to the songs he lends his voice to.
Also heard in Fislan hai which features Hrishita Bhatt doing the garba, the song has a similar feel in terms of its composition. Since it has been sung by Singh again, you are quite bored as you long for some variety in the vocals. Bhatt who is seen after a while on the silver screen dances well, but she only adds to the oomph factor in the song. Loud drum- beats and jingles have been predominantly used to score the song’s music. While the song’s lyrics by Manoj Muntashir are in tandem with the song’s themes, one wishes you could hear more of a female playback singer with traces of Madhavi Srivastav in Ishq...Composed by Nayab as well as Singh, one can only hope Maula pal mein palat de baazi has been composed differently. While the song’s vocals by Singh again are alright, the song is far more soothing as it uses less instruments. The song is interspersed with satirical dialogues and is definitely one of the better songs in the album.
With all the songs having been composed and sung by Sukhwinder Singh, barring Maula… which has also been composed by Nayab. The lyrics too for all three songs have been penned by Muntashir which only makes the album more monotonous to hear.
