Ajith Kumar reacts to stampede at Vijay’s rally, says people are obsessed with gathering a crowd: ‘Why does it happen only with film stars?’

The incident took the lives of 41 people, with several more injured. Actor Ajith Kumar, who is also an icon of Tamil cinema, recently talked about the stampede and decided to blame more than just Vijay for what happened. He pointed fingers at several other parties and urged people to stop gathering a crowd just for show.
While talking to the Hollywood Reporter Indian, Ajith expressed regret over the incident and said that he wonders why such incidents take place during political rallies and film screenings. He said, “I want to take this in the right spirit, and I don’t want to put anyone down, but there is so much happening in Tamil Nadu today. The Karur stampede that happened. That individual (Vijay) is not responsible; we are all responsible. Even the media has a part to play in this.”

He critiqued the kind of society we are living in and said that people are wrongfully obsessed with showing off how much crowd they can pull in. He also said that such incidents harm the image of the entire film industry.
“Today I think we have become a society that is obsessed with gathering a crowd to show a crowd. All this has to end. I mean, you also have crowds going for cricket matches, but you don’t see this happening there. Why is it only happening with film stars? It projects the entire film industry in a bad light,” said Ajith.
Finally, the actor said that people turning up to see their favourite stars is something natural, and he doesn’t mind the attention. Ajith, however, argued that even though people like certain stars, there is a right way to express that love. He said, “We don’t wish this. We want that love, and this is what we work hard for. Being away from family doing long hours on sets. We are getting hurt during shooting the film, and we are dealing with depression and sleepless nights. For what? For the love of the people. But there is a way to show that love.”
After the stampede, Vijay contacted the families and invited them to a resort in Mahabalipuram. A total of 37 families showed up to meet the actor. Out of the 41 families, 39 have already paid Rs 20 lakh. Even though he met with the families personally, the choice of venue, a seaside resort close to his home, has raised many questions. People are arguing that he should have gone to Karur to meet the families instead of asking them to visit him.
On the other hand, Vijay argued that the stampede wasn’t due to a logistical failure, but it was the result of a political conspiracy. In a video posted online he said, “I have gone to about five districts for campaigns, and why does this happen only in Karur? People know the truth. People are watching everything. When people of Karur themselves started revealing the truth, I felt like God himself had come out to speak the truth.”
