The National Film Awards for the year 2021 were announced on Thursday, and Shreya Ghoshal won the Best Female Playback Singer award for the Iravin Nizhal song “Maayava Thooyava”, composed by AR Rahman. This marks Shreya Ghoshal’s fifth National Award. She has earlier won the award for “Bairi Piya” from Devdas, “Dheere Jalna” from Paheli, “Yeh Ishq Haye” from Jab We Met, “Pherari Mon” from Antaheen, and “Jeev Rangala” from Jogwa.

R Parthiban, director of Iravin Nizhal, has congratulated Shreya and Rahman on the National Award for the film’s song. He also thanked them for making his movie even more special. Iravin Nizhal, touted to be the first single-shot non-linear film, has so far won many awards in film festivals across the world. Now, it has added another feather to its hat.

Parthiban, in an official statement, said, “Like all the workers who were part of the ISRO’s Chandrayaan 3 mission, who felt immense happiness for the success, I am also feeling the same as Shreya Ghoshal has won the National Award for Maayava Thooyava song. Though the film has won more than 100 international awards, I was looking forward to our National Award. And I thank AR Rahman and Shreya Ghoshal for making the film’s name and my name be part of the list.”

Written by Karky, “Maayava Thooyava” is a romantic number. The song isn’t quite popular with fans, and that can be said about all the tracks of the film. However, the National Award has made many rediscover it.

Directed by R Parthiban, the movie, also starring Rekha Nair, Brigida Saga, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, and Robo Shankar, marked the first collaboration between Parthiban and AR Rahman. The actor said that he had been waiting for a long time to collaborate with Rahman. The collaboration has now led to a National Award.
