Ex-jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta, who is played in the recently released Netflix series Black Warrant, spoke about his interactions with the high-profile convict Charles Sobhraj. Sunil Gupta co-authored the book upon which Black Warrant is based. The series was released to positive reviews earlier this month. In a new interview, he spoke about dealing with the serial killer, and recalled recruiting him into his legal paperwork department in the jail. He said that Sobhraj was so good at writing petitions for prisoners, he had a better success rate than even some lawyers. Appearing on the Dostcast YouTube channel, he said that he was made a 'legal assistant' in Tihar Jail, which pleased him immensely. He said, "Sobhraj would keep coming to me with something or the other. It's not like I did him any favours, but he'd keep coming to me. He was fond of making petitions for prisoners. You won't believe it, but the success rate of his petitions was way higher than those made by professional lawyers. He was educated, and he was also experienced. So, he knew exactly what language to use for the judges." He continued, "Because I wasn't assigned proper typists, I recruited other convicts. Along with Sobhraj, I got a guy named Gurdeep; he was also a murder convict. Then I got a Captain Rathod, who was convicted of spying for Pakistan. He'd have become a General if he hadn't become a spy." Sunil Gupta said that according to the jail manual, every convict should be utilised to the best of their capabilities. "Sobhraj was good at legal paperwork, so we made use of him." Sobhraj did, however, 'betray' Sunil's trust when he spiked all the jailers' desserts with sedatives on his birthday, and staged an escape. He was eventually caught again. Sobhraj was subsequently imprisoned in Nepal. In 2022, he was released from the jail in Nepal on grounds of old age and was deported to his home country of France. Co-created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, Black Warrant received positive reviews. The show features Zahan Kapoor as Sunil, and Siddhant Gupta as Sobhraj.
