Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane's Black Warrant, which is streaming on Netflix, follows the story of Sunil Kumar Gupta when he started working as a jailer in Delhi's Tihar Jail back in the 1980s. The jailer participated in a conversation with actor Zahan Kapoor, who portrays him on the show, as well as Motwane. The conversation was shared on Netflix India's YouTube channel. The show also presents serial killer Charles Sobhraj as a supporting character, played by Sidhant Gupta. When asked if Sunil liked Charles' representation on screen, he gave it a "90" Sunil shared that Sobhraj actually helped him in securing his joining letter on his first day at Tihar. "I thought he came in like an officer, was walking around in an authoritative way. I thought he is a senior officer. He went in and got my joining letter," he shared. When asked how he learnt about Sobhraj's real identity, Sunil shared, "I got to know the next day that he was Charles Sobhraj, when I went on a round inside." Motwane curiously asked Sunil why Sobhraj chose to help him, and he shared, "The habitual prisoners want some officers on their payroll, whom they can ask for things from the market, or if they need to send a message outside so everyone tries to do that." The visit has been recapped, and modified, on the show. Sunil shared that the surprise visit seemingly went well, but a report in the next day's newspaper led to his suspension. It was at this point that Sobhraj offered him help. Sunil called him a "humanitarian" for his gesture. "Sobhraj offered help when I was suspended. He asked, 'Sir, can I help you?' I thought, 'Such a humanitarian'. I said, 'No, thank you'," he recalled. Charles Sobhraj was an infamous serial killer, and was sentenced to the Tihar Jail. At this time, he was convicted for multiple sexual assaults and murders. After his term at Tihar, he was imprisoned in Nepal. In 2022, he was released from Nepal jail on grounds of old age and was deported to his home country, France.
