What is known about Liam Payne’s death?

Police told the Associated Press that Payne died due to “extremely serious injuries” caused by his fall. The hotel manager was heard speaking on the emergency call about “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol … He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.”

An investigation and an autopsy is being conducted. Reports of the manager’s call have brought back the musician’s problems with sobriety into focus. According to the music magazine Billboard, Payne discussed the issues in a podcast in 2021, “revealing his struggle with depression and addiction during the 1D (One Direction) years.”

He recalled how the group was often restricted to hotel rooms when they travelled, due to safety concerns. “The problem was, in the band … the best way to secure us, because of how big we’d got, was just to lock us in our rooms. What’s in the room? A minibar. So at a certain point, I just thought, ‘Well, I’m going to have a party for one,’ and that just seemed to carry on throughout many years of my life.”

At times, he sought therapy and had periods of sobriety. In May 2023, he said he had gone 100 days without alcohol, saying, “I feel really, really good, and support from the fans and everything has been really, really good. So, I’m super happy.”

What explains the success of One Direction?

One Direction was among the most popular musical artists of the 2010s. The band was formed in 2010 as part of the music reality TV show X Factor UK. Payne, along with members Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, were aged between 16 and 18 when the band came third on the show.

Producer Simon Cowell signed them onto his label, with their first album Up All Night was released in 2011. Almost instantly, the band garnered a loyal fan following, particularly among young girls in the UK and the United States. Hit singles from the album included songs like ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘One Thing’, characterised by upbeat mood and simple lyrics.

In its review, Billboard said the songs were “endlessly playable”, highlighting themes of “innocent romance”. “Even on its weakest tracks, however, “Up All Night” demonstrates an originality in sound that was necessary for the revitalization of the boy band movement,” it said.

With one album released every year until 2015, the band members gradually increased their contribution to songwriting. Their popularity grew — with a movie release, world tours, and an active social media presence — and their personalities were at the front and centre of the band’s image.

The other side of fame

Scenes of thousands of young fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the band in public evoked memories of Beatlemania, the obsession with the Beatles among a similar demographic. While the obsessiveness of a section of fans helped propel the band’s popularity, it was also a double-edged sword. Often, the real-life partners of the young singers were targeted through coordinated online attacks. Rumours about the members’ personal lives also snowballed often.

A Pitchfork article described one such situation when Liam and his then-girlfriend Danielle Peazer were in New York in 2012. “A fan-run “update account”—where admins tweet all sightings and information on the boys’ whereabouts—tipped fans off, and suddenly the couple is descended upon. They try to keep their heads down and continue walking, until Danielle is hit with a shoe someone threw at her from the swarm.”

Member Zayn Malik was also troubled by the lack of creative freedom given to the members in creating their music. He left the band in 2015 and the remaining members released one album without him. In 2016, the quartet announced an extended hiatus.

All members began pursuing solo careers, dabbling in varying music genres to mixed results. In its success, the band revitalised a sub-genre, with many boy bands popping up on the music scene in the Western world. The close nature of fan-artist relations also obtained a deeper dimension thanks to their influence and has only intensified today.
