Who is Alan Dershowitz, named in the Epstein documents and possibly Israel’s lawyer at The Hague?

In the past, Dershowitz has defended alleged rapists and murderers with a degree of success. Now he defends himself from allegations of statutory rape revealed in the unsealed Epstein documents.

Alan Dershowitz, 85, has made a career defending some of the United States’ most controversial figures in court. He will now defend himself after being named in the first tranche of the ‘Epstein documents’ unsealed on Wednesday (January 3) night.

“One such powerful individual that Epstein forced then-minor Jane Doe #3 to have sexual relations with was former Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, a close friend of Epstein’s and well-known criminal defense attorney,” one of the unsealed documents says.

In recent weeks, Dershowitz has zealously supported Israel’s military assault on Gaza. Earlier this week, Israeli media reported that he is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pick to represent Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a genocide case filed by South Africa.

Dershowitz has maintained his innocence

“I want everything out, every document, every piece of paper, half-truths or lies,” he told US media outlet Newsnation on January 2. “I know that they would prove what I’ve said from day one — that I did nothing wrong,” he said.

But the very first tranche of unsealed documents revealed some serious allegations against him, including the statutory rape of Jane Doe #3 (names of all minors have been redacted in the unsealed documents).

“Epstein required Jane Doe #3 to have sexual relations with Dershowitz on numerous occasions while she was a minor, not only in Florida but also on private planes, in New York, New Mexico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands,” one of the documents says. “…Dershowitz was [also] an eye-witness to the sexual abuse of many other minors by Epstein and several of Epstein’s co-conspirators,” it adds.

In response, he has asked, ‘What about Hamas?’

Following the revelations, Dershowitz has attacked “radical feminists”, Hamas, and the MeToo movement, and claimed victimhood as a Jewish person.

“I understand all the feminist groups and the radicals who think this is the worst thing in the world that anybody ever had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein… Where are all those radical feminists when it comes to the Hamas rapes of young Jewish girls, sexual abuse, beheadings? They are quiet, they are silent! The incredible hypocrisy of the MeToo movement. Me too, except if you’re a Jew,” he told Sean Hannity on Fox News.

He demanded “a list of all the radical feminists who are pushing hard” to get the names of Epstein’s associates out.

In a statement to People, he said: “The woman who initially accused me subsequently stated that she may have misidentified me and she withdrew her lawsuit against me.” The massages he received at Epstein’s house were from an adult woman, and “I kept my underwear on”, he said.

Dershowitz was a lawyer and long-time friend of Epstein

Starting in 2005, investigators had traced a sex-trafficking operation to the now-deceased financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and his now-notorious mansions and island. Despite sworn accounts from more than a dozen women, Dershowitz and his team had secured a non-prosecution agreement in which Epstein pleaded guilty to minor charges and served only a brief sentence.

In 2014, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, one of Epstein’s many victims, stated in a court filing that Epstein lent her out for sex to his friends, including Dershowitz. This would lead to multiple suits and counter-suits which were eventually dropped in 2022, with Giuffre stating that “I now recognize I may have made a mistake in identifying Mr. Dershowitz.”

This is what Dershowitz was referring to in his statement to People magazine. It is unclear whether Jane Doe #3 in the Epstein documents is Giuffre.

Lawyer for O J Simpson, Trump, and perhaps now Israel

In his over-five-decades-long legal career, Dershowitz has defended a number of individuals accused of rape and murder, including boxer Mike Tyson, who was charged and convicted of rape, American football player O J Simpson, who was charged with the murder of his former wife and her friend, and the film producer Harvey Weinstein, who was convicted on multiple counts of sexual assault.

He was also a part of the legal team of Donald Trump during his 2020 impeachment hearings, and presented oral arguments at the Senate hearings. Afterwards, he lobbied the Trump administration to grant clemency to his clients and, according to The New York Times, succeeded at least 12 times.
