A total 651 Hindu temples in India are designated as Centrally Protected Monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). There is no record with the central government of the number of Hindu temples under the control of state governments, Lok Sabha was told on Monday.
The largest number of Hindu temples under the ASI’s protection is in Karnataka, followed by Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
These figures were provided by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel.
On March 12, 2018, then Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture Dr Mahesh Sharma had told Lok Sabha that in all, there are 3,686 centrally protected monuments/sites under the ASI. According to a statewise break-up provided by the government then, the largest number of these monuments/sites are in Uttar Pradesh (743).
