Will Satya Nadella open Microsoft’s window of opportunity in #DigitalIndia?

Nadella is expected to make some big ticket announcements as a part of his company's 'Future Unleashed' programmed in Mumbai on Thursday.

It took exactly a month for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his counterpart in Microsoft Satya Nadella to pat return visits to India following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s successful trip to Silicon Valley.

Nadella is expected to make some big ticket announcements as a part of his company’s ‘Future Unleashed’ programmed in Mumbai on Thursday. It is tough to hazard a guess, but the announcements could be more of a macro nature and those that could increase Microsoft’s footprint in India over the years. So education, health, smart cities and digital infrastructure could what Nadella focuses on when he shares the stage with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and leaders of Indian industry like Anand Mahindra.

The fruits of the PM’s visit to California have been starting to show in the weeks since. Elon Musk of Tesla has tweeted his intention to look at India as base for setting up a battery plant, Google is looking to expand its Project Loon to India and Zuckerberg was in town drumming up support for Free Basics. Microsoft will not want to be left out.

It is not hard to find why India, more importantly Digital India, holds so much promise for Silicon Valley companies.

Any development on Digital India will have some impact in California with at least once company benefiting with more business, jobs and valuations. Also, there is no Marley that offers the growth, scale and stability that India can at the moment. No Silicon Valley company would want to find themselves missing on the board when everyone else is surfing this wave.

Now to see how Nadella opens himself a window of opportunity in this new, digital, India.
