It is significant because it is the first following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which divided the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and Congress fought the election together, while the People’s Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party ran separately.

According to exit polls, the Congress-National Conference combination is likely to perform well in Jammu & Kashmir, with various studies estimating that the alliance will win between 35 and 40 seats, perhaps resulting in a hung legislature. The BJP is likely to win 20-25 seats, while the PDP is forecast to win 4-7 seats.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won a landslide victory across the country, winning three seats in Jammu and Kashmir. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was first led by the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and then by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, won the remaining three positions.
