The Indian Army on Wednesday rescued 74 students and seven staff members of a law school after they got stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu highway following a landslide and heavy snowfall, near Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district. The students and staff belonged to Mohanlal Sukhadia University’s Law College in Udaipur. They were heading back to Udaipur after a trip to Kashmir when a landslide blocked their way. A snow storm made conditions worse, stranding them at the spot. According to Army PRO Lt Colonel Suneel Bartwal, the Army recognised the critical urgency of the situation, and prioritised their evacuation. They were taken to an Army camp, where they were provided with medical assistance, blankets, food, and shelter. “A landslide occurred just 500 metres in front of our vehicle after crossing Banihal, leaving us frightened,” a student said. According to the student, they had earlier been stuck in Anantnag district’s Qazigund town for three days due to snow. The principal of the law college, Kalpesh Nikawat, expressed his gratitude to the Army for their swift action.
