The elections to the Arunachal Assembly will take place on April 19 and the last date for filing nominations was on Wednesday.
Violence erupted outside the DC Office in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Thursday in which a senior police officer was injured when supporters of a NPP candidate went on a rampage over rejection of his nomination.
As the crowd, which police said comprised around a hundred people, turned to pelting stones outside the DC Office, SP Dekio Gumja was injured and two police vehicles were damaged. Police resorted to firing in the air to disperse the crowd and control the situation.
The incident took place around 3 pm after the candidature of National People’s Party’s candidate from the Pongchau-Wakka Assembly constituency, Gangdiap Gansa, was rejected by the Returning Officer during the scrutiny of nomination papers.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, eight districts of Nagaland and some other areas for six more months after a review of the law and order situation in these two northeastern states, officials said.
