THE condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has worsened over the past 24 hours and he has been put on life support, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences said in a statement tonight.
The 93-year-old BJP leader was admitted on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.
A team of five doctors was formed under the chairmanship of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria to treat Vajpayee.
“Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life-support system,” said Aarti Vij, chairperson of the institute’s media and protocol division.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited AIIMS this evening to enquire about Vajpayee’s condition. Modi reached the hospital at around 7.15 pm and spent about 50 minutes there.
Subsequently, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi dropped by. Earlier in the evening, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani had visited the hospital.
On Saturday, Vajpayee’s health had deteriorated following which Home Minister Rajnath Singh had visited him.
