A day after the Delhi High Court sought the Delhi government’s response regarding the number of seats still vacant in the economically weaker section (EWS) and disadvantaged groups category, government officials said “approximately 8,000 seats reserved for these categories are still vacant in Delhi schools”.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Thursday said these seats will be filled by the Directorate of Education. He said this was decided after a review meeting of the Education Department at the Delhi Secretariat.

According to sources, these seats will be “advertised and filled” within the current week. “We will be advertising by tomorrow and those parents who failed to secure seats for their wards can avail of these seats,” the official said.

However, only those parents who had applied to these unaided private schools when admissions were announced in February 2012 will be considered.

Earlier this month, the Directorate of Education had sent letters to all schools in Delhi, asking them to send information about seats that “may still be vacant” in the EWS category.

The Education Minister said,“The government will ensure that every child is granted admission.”

He said instructions have been issued to all officials concerned for granting admission to every child.
