Marksheet scam: University sets up exam reforms cell

The Board of Examination of Pune University has decided to set up the Exam Reforms Cell to improve the functioning of the examination department.

The Board of Examination (BOE) of Pune University has decided to set up the Exam Reforms Cell to improve the functioning of the examination department. The department has drawn flak over its functioning, particularly after the fake marksheet issue came to light.

“A decision to set up the Exam Reforms Cell in the university was taken by the BOE during a meeting on Friday. The cell is needed due to the large number of colleges affiliated to the university, which has put pressure on the examination department,” said Nandakumar Nikam, member of the management council of the University.

At present, the university has 650 affiliated and 300 recognised colleges and around 8 lakh students.

The cell will be functional round the year and look at ways to conduct examinations more efficiently. Several senior university officials, including assistant registrar and officials with the technical know-how will be part of the cell.

Following the fake marksheet scam, several senate members had raised the need for examination reforms during a meeting held in March.

Senior senate member Gajanan Ekbote, who had pressed for the setting up of the cell, said,“Such a centre is required because the system of examination needs to be continuously revised. This can be used to make the process of examination devoid of glitches.”

According to Ekbote, the most urgent issue that this cell must tackle is the decentralisation of the examination board. “It is difficult to manage exams across three districts (Pune,Nashik and Ahmednagar) by an examination controller based in Pune. There should be an independent examination in-charge in each district who can coordinate things,” he added.
