While IIT Bombay’s Techfest is known for hosting some of the most interesting events based on science and tech every year, this year the core group has decided to show the social side of the festival. The students have launched a new initiative to contribute to the Indo-Pak peace process.

As part of Techfest this year, the students of IIT-B have launched an Indo-Pak diary campaign called ‘Ummeed-e-Milaap’ with a view to promote exchange of thoughts between students of India and Pakistan.

Students from 30 colleges in Mumbai,Lahore and Karachi will pen down their insights on the Indo-Pak Peace Process, based on themes like role of students in the peace process, role of culture, sports, social and idea exchanges between the neighbours, role of media for a peaceful tomorrow, your perception of the common man living across the border. Two similar diaries will be circulated simultaneously in India and Pakistan. One of the diaries is currently in IIT-B,which will be sent to HR College at Churchgate on Monday. While the diary in Pakistan will be circulated in colleges at Lahore and Karachi from September 10. Twenty best entries from each college will be selected and pasted in the diary which will then move on to the next college.

Ronnie Philip,an IIT-B student and member of Techfest core group, said,“The campaign will be conducted in Pakistan by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS),Lahore and AIESEC in Karachi. The idea is to instill among the youth a sense of fraternity between the two nations. And we believe our motive will be received warmly by Indians and Pakistanis alike.”

The diary will also be kept on display in LUMS,Lahore during their Scientific festival ‘PSIFI’ 2011.

“Both the diaries will then be received by Techfest core group before the festival and a ‘Ummeed-e-Milaap Diary’ will be created by combining the views and messages from both the diaries. We already have a page dedicated for this campaign on Techfest website inviting students to pen down their views. These messages will also be a added in a special section for the best entries from the online campaign in the combined diary,” added Ronnie

The students will unveil the ‘Ummeed-e-Milaap diary’ at IIT-B during the Techfest from January 6 to January 8 and it will be kept on display throughout the festival.
