Marking the first anniversary of the launch of Smart City Mission, Saurabh Patel, finance minister of Gujarat, inaugurated a newly built Smart City Centre at Surat Municipal Corporation head office in Muglisara in Surat and relaunched an intra-state flight services between Surat and Bhavnagar.

A 20-feet wide screen, made up of 16 panels, has been affixed on the wall in the main room of this centre where 25 people can monitor the happenings in the city. This centre is linked with the CCTV project of Surat city police department that has over 650 CCTV cameras at different locations. An additional 1,000 CCTVs, proposed to be set up by the SMC soon, will also be linked to this centre. Saurabh Patel also launched Intelligent Transit Management System (ITMS) and Automatic Vehicle Locating System (AVLS) applications. He also lad the foundation stones and unveiled different development projects in the city, including BRTS bus stops, schools, gardens, library, anganwadi, etc.
SMC engineer Jatin Shah said, “At the smart city centre (digital control room), all the departments will be connected. Monitoring of different services, like night brushing, cleaning of roads, garbage collection and disposal, road repairing, health services and illegal constructions, can be done on the screens. Under the ITMS, we would keep watch on the public transport systems in the city. There are 160 BRTS buses, 200 city buses, 50 emergency vehicles and other vehicles of the SMC plying on roads. Under AVLS, we can keep a tab on the movements of these buses. “
The minister also relaunched the intra-state flight services of Ventura AirConnect, an airline operated by diamond barons of Surat city and a real-estate developer from Saurashtra. The company had launched its operations in 2014, but had stopped operations a year later.
