UNDER FIRE for having attended an iftaar party organised by RSS-affiliated Muslim Rashtriya Manch in Delhi last week, Aligarh Muslim University V-C Zamiruddin Shah said Wednesday Muslims in India must accept that Narendra Modi is prime minister, and if they ignore the ruling dispensation it will be at their peril.

“To all those who have accused me of being a self-seeking agent of RSS, I would invite them to visit AMU and let’s talk. We should know the people who can influence matters in favours of AMU and keep channels of communication open with them without selling our souls,” Lt Gen (retired) Shah said. “We must make everyone understand our position that AMU stands for secularism, inclusiveness, moderation, large-hearted tolerance and modernity with Islamic flavours. What does one do when there is an offer from an extended hand. Should one spurn it? There are many shades in an organisation. We should shake hands with saner elements.”
