Grenade attack in Srinagar on poll eve

Piercing the strong security cordon,militants hurled a grenade at a polling station in Nawab Bazar locality.

A day before voting for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency,militants on Wednesday made an abortive bid to blow up a polling station in the city where security forces detected and defused a powerful IED outside historic Jamia Masjid averting a possible tragedy.

Piercing the strong security cordon,militants hurled a grenade at a polling station in Nawab Bazar locality here on Wednesday evening.

But the grenade failed to explode and was neutralised by the bomb disposal squad,CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathy told PTI here.

The grenade attack took place minutes after para-military troopers took positions at the polling booth,he said.

Earlier in the day,security forces detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device,planted by militants,outside Jamia Masjid in downtown city.

The IED,weighing five-kg,was kept in a gas cylinder near the main gate of the Masjid in interior Srinagar,the spokesman said.

The bomb disposal squad,which was immediately summoned,defused the IED averting a possible tragedy,he said.

Militants’ plan to set off an explosion on the eve of polling was foiled with timely detection of the IED by alert CRPF personnel,the spokesman said.
