Amidst a power crisis,Haryana received some respite as the 600 MW Unit-1 of the Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Project at Hisar resumed operations after remaining shut for close to seven months. The facility had been facing problems of high vibration and temperature in its turbine bearings since December,2011.
The problem has now been solved and the unit achieved full load of 600 MW on the very first day of its rehabilitation on August 10. It has also been synchronised with the grid, a spokesman of the Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGCL) said here on Monday.
He added technical experts from the OEM Shanghai Electric Corporation (SEC),China have been camping at the plant since May,2012 to attend to the vibration problem along with the Engineering,Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor RInfra and HPGCL engineers. The unit is expected to generate about 144 lakh additional units of electricity daily for the consumers in the state, when operated at its rated capacity.
While there had been repeated attempts to revive the plant, the unit had to be forcibly shut down on April 28,2012,due to the vibration problem, the spokesperson said.
The problem was being attended to by RInfra and HPGCL engaged the Department of Civil Engineering,Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Roorkee for an independent evaluation of the quality of concrete in the foundation structure and the bearing pedestals of the Turbo Generator of Unit-1.
A team of civil engineering experts from IIT Roorkee comprising of Dr Umesh Kumar and Dr Bhupinder Singh visited RGTPP on July 17 and 18,in this regard. The machine was rolled on July 25,by RInfra under the supervision of SEC experts, however the vibration problem still persisted.
Since the Unit could not be revived, inspite of repeated trials and addition of balancing weights,HPGCL contacted M/s Sampoorna Rotor Dynamics Consultancy (SRDC),Hyderabad which is represented by IIT professor and renowned vibration expert Prof J S Rao and other turbine experts including Dr K V Bhaskar Sharma and Dr MCR Prasad, and requested them to visit RGTPP to examine the problem and suggest solutions. Further, another reputed turbine expert Baboo Ram was also requested to visit RGTPP in this regard. All the above experts visited RGTPP site on August 1 and August 2,to study the problem and suggested remedial measures to be undertaken by HPGCL, the spokesperson mentioned.
