The Haryana government on Wednesday formed a committee to keep track of the situation arising out of deficient rainfall in the state. The committee, comprising of the administrative secretaries of revenue, cooperation, irrigation, agriculture, power, public health, food and supplies, rural development and animal husbandry departments, will meet every week to take stock of the situation.
The additional chief secretary and financial commissioner, revenue, will function as the nodal agency for monitoring the situation and the control room of the revenue department will function round-the-clock.
Chief Secretary P K Chaudhery said the present situation in the state was a matter of concern due to 72 per cent deficiency in rainfall between June 1 to July 31. The next ten days will be crucial. Hence, the departments have been directed to prepare contingency plans focusing on actions that may be required in case any drought situation arises, he said. Chaudhery urged the power department to take steps to ensure that the agriculture sector received adequate electricity.
The committee of secretaries took note that 35 per cent additional power had been supplied to agriculture sector this year but this has led to financial stress on the power utilities as power had to be bought at a higher cost. The chief secretary, however, stressed that the farm sector needed the additional power. He also asked the power department to seek additional power and financial aid from the central government.
Meanwhile, the irrigation department stated that while the Yamuna river inflow has increased in the last 3 to 4 days, the Bhakra pond level continues to be a cause of concern and may result in water deficiency over the next six months.
