Sixteen more deemed universities have got a clean chit from the University Grants Commission which has been probing the functioning of these institutions following allegations that many undeserving institutes have been awarded the status.
So far,a total of 78 deemed universities have got the clearance from the UGC after the probe was initiated. The UGC was investigating the activities of 130 deemed universities following complaints.
Sources said the Commission met here yesterday and passed the review reports giving a clean chit to the 16 deemed universities, which were under the scanner along with other such institutions over their functioning.
The UGC has earlier approved the reports about the functioning of 62 such institutions, sources said.
The reports, however, found certain deficiencies with regard to facilities and faculty in these institutes.
The probe was carried out after the HRD Ministry instructed the UGC to conduct probe in the wake of allegations that many undeserving institutes have been awarded the deemed university status.
The UGC will forward the reports to the ministry for its consideration, sources said.
The ministry had set up another committee to review the functioning of such institutes. The committee has already submitted its report which is under the consideration of the government.
