5.2 intensity earthquake triggers panic in Bihar

Reports said the tremor, which occured at 9:02 pm, lasted for 10 seconds and was felt in Patna and other areas.


An earthquake of 5.2 intensity on the richter scale shook Patna and other parts of Bihar tonight, triggering panic among people.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in Nepal and contiguous areas in Bihar, Director State Meteorological Department A K Sen said.

Reports said the tremor, which occured at 9:02 pm, lasted for 10 seconds and was felt in Patna, Darbhanga, Araria, Munger, Supual and Madhubani among others.

Nepal falls in seismic zone five and earthquakes have been experienced in the Himalayan country from time to time.

Darbhanga, Madhubani and other areas in the Kosi region contiguous to the country have suffered its impact in the past too, Sen said.

The Met office director said so far no no report of damage has been received from anywhere in Bihar.

The earthquake triggered panic among citizens in Patna and other affected parts as people ran out of their homes into open areas.
