Amritsar:Four children were injured after the roof of a room at the private Alexandra Middle School collapsed at Bhindi Saidaan village near Ajnala on Friday. “It was recess time and four students were inside when the girder collapsed,” Bhindi Saidaan SHO Balkar Singh said. The injured were rushed to the hospital. So far,none of the family members of the students have lodged any complaint with the police.

HC notice to Punjab on vacant Lokpal post

Chandigarh:The Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday issued notices to Punjab on a PIL demanding appointment of Lokpal in the state. The petitioner,advocate H C Arora,has sought directions to the state government to initiate the process of appointing Lokpal. Arora claimed the post has been lying vacant since April 1,2012,after demission of office by Justice DS Dhaliwal.

Give copy of PILs to state govt too: HC

Chandigarh:So that there is no wastage of time in adjudication of PILs,the Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday ordered that those filing PILs should supply copies of their petitions in advance to law officers of the concerned state. At present,courts issue notices to concerned state,seeking its response to the PILs and then pass necessary directions results in adjournments and wastage of time.

Man shoots self in head over minor scuffle with spouse

Amritsar:Upset over his wife’s insistence to take their five-year-old daughter to a wedding wearing lehenga against his wishes,a man shot himself in Amritsar with his licensed revolver on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. Anoor (24) wanted his daughter to go to the wedding in a suit.

Badal in favour of granting deemed varsity status to AIL

Mohali:Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday favoured granting of deemed university status to Army Institute of Law (AIL).
