Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and real-estate businessman Dharmendra Chowdhary (35) was shot dead by unidentified motorcyclists in Aligarh’s Banadevi police station area Saturday evening. Chowdhary had been announced the BSP candidate from Aligarh’s Atrauli seat for the Assembly elections in 2017.
Police said Chowdhary was travelling in his SUV when he was attacked. He suffered six bullet injuries and died on the spot. Driver Sanjay has been detained for questioning and an FIR against two unidentified motorcyclists has been filed. No one has been arrested so far.Police said Chowdhary was going to meet his friend when the incident took place.
Station House Officer of Banadevi police station K P Singh said when the SUV reached Baradari crossing, two bikers waved hands, asking Sanjay to stop. As soon as the SUV came to a halt, they opened fire. Chowdhary and Sanjay came out of the vehicle and tried to flee, but assailants followed Chowdhary and shot him.
Hit by bullets, Chowdhary slumped to the ground. The attackers then fired at him from a close range and escaped, said Singh. The BSP leader was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Additional SP, Aligarh, Pankaj Pandey said pistols of .38 borer were used.
DIG, Aligarh Range, Mohit Agarwal said they are looking into all angles, including political and business rivalry but added that they are yet to find any evidence suggesting that the murder was a fallout of political rivalry.
A BSP leader said Chowdhary joined the party about six years ago and his candidature for Atrauli seat was announced last year.
