Cong to wield bugging row, CAG reports against govt

Many Congress leaders Monday demanded a probe into the alleged bugging.

The row over the alleged bugging of Nitin Gadkari’s residence and CAG reports indicting the Gujarat government could become ammunition for the Congress to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament.

The party Monday dragged Modi into the bugging controversy, saying “mass scale” phone tapping took place when he was the chief minister of Gujarat.

“This used to happen in Gujarat. Now it seems the snooping culture has come to Delhi and to the entire country. Because it appears the sutradhar (architect) has come here,” Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil said. Although Gadkari denied reports that bugging devices were found at his residence, the Congress seem to be in no mood to let the issue die down.

The Congress also attacked Modi over the CAG reports which had indicted the Gujarat government, saying the reports were of the period when he was the chief minister.

“The BJP used to attack the UPA over CAG reports as if CAG is god. We wonder whether their yardsticks are still the same. In my estimation, the irregularities amount to Rs 29,000 crore,” he said.
