Cong-BJP slanging match in MCD over CWG corruption

The BJP and Congress in MCD traded charges and counter-charges over alleged corruption in Commonwealth Games projects.

The BJP and Congress in MCD today traded charges and counter-charges over alleged corruption in Commonwealth Games projects, with the ruling party hitting out at Delhi government and the opposition demanding a CBI probe into “involvement” of BJP leaders in irregularities.

At a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee,Leader of Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma raised the issue of CBI lodging FIR against six MCD officials over alleged irregularities in a streetlighting project.

He alleged that “some BJP leaders in MCD” had pressurised the officials to tamper with tender documents to ensure profit for “a relative of a top leader of their party” and demanded a CBI probe into the matter. BJP councillors refuted the claim.

Later, speaking on the issue,BJP councillor V P Pandey raised the issue of alleged diversion of SC/ST welfare funds for Games projects by Delhi government. Congress members strongly objected to this and started raising slogans.

The Congress councillors, carrying placards with slogans like ‘MCD ko chuna lagana bandh karo’ (Stop fleecing MCD),shouted slogans demanding a CBI probe. BJP members also raised slogans against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi.

The sloganeering by Congressmen went on for more than an hour and the agenda was taken up and passed amid the din.

Sharma claimed two more MCD projects, which are linked to Games, are under Central Vigilance Commission scanner — the parking facility near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the road underbridge on Prem Nagar-Sewa Nagar crossing.
